Do you experience unexplained symptoms like bloating, fatigue, skin rashes, or headaches? These could be signs of food sensitivities, also known as food intolerances. Unlike immediate, IgE-mediated food allergies (which cause reactions like hives or anaphylaxis), food sensitivities are often delayed and can be harder to pinpoint.

At Regis Medical, we offer IgG-based food sensitivity testing to help you identify potential triggers and improve your overall well-being. We don't generally recommend this as a first-line approach to diagnosis of common conditions such as Eczema, Migraine, Irritable Bowel Syndrome. However, we understand and acknowledge that there are patients who might potentially benefit from knowing about their food sensitivity, after having walked through a proper diagnostic journey with our doctors at Regis Medical.

What is an IgG Food Sensitivity Test?

Our IgG test measures the levels of IgG antibodies in your blood in response to a variety of common foods. Elevated IgG levels may indicate that your body is reacting to certain foods, potentially contributing to a range of symptoms. It's important to understand that this test identifies sensitivities, not allergies. A food sensitivity is a less severe reaction than a food allergy and doesn't involve the same life-threatening immune response.

What Is the Difference Between Classic IgE Food Allergies and Delayed IgG Food Allergies?

It is important to understand the difference between the two types of food allergies. The classic IgE food allergy refers to an immediate reaction to specific foods caused by the body's immune system producing IgE antibodies. A classic reaction involves hives and severe bilateral eye swelling (angioedema), seconds to minutes after exposure to suspected substance. Since the reaction is often immediate, IgE tests are used to confirm rather than detect food allergies.

On the other hand, a delayed IgG food allergy occurs when the body produces IgG antibodies, which can lead to an inflammatory process, causing a delayed allergic reaction, which can appear up to three days after the consumption of a trigger food. In this case, it is much more difficult to pinpoint the exact trigger food for the allergy due to the delayed reaction. An IgG test helps to localise and limit the suspects, which is crucial in identifying your trigger foods so that you can avoid future allergic reactions.

Who are Recommended For The Test?

  • Individuals with recurring digestive issues (bloating, gas, diarrhea).
  • Those with unexplained skin conditions (eczema, acne).
  • People experiencing chronic fatigue, migraines, or joint pain.
  • Parents concerned about their children’s reactions to food.

How Does the Test Work?

The process is simple and convenient:

  1. Consultation: You'll meet with one of our family physicians or general practitioners to discuss your symptoms and medical history. This consultation will help determine if IgG testing is appropriate for you and which test panel is most suitable.
  1. Blood Sample: A blood sample is taken, similar to a routine blood test.
  1. Laboratory Analysis: The sample is sent to a certified laboratory where IgG antibody levels to various food items are measured.
  1. Results and Consultation: Once the results are available, you'll have a follow-up consultation to review your personalized report. We'll explain which foods showed elevated IgG levels and guide you through the next steps.

What do I need to bring for my IgG Food Allergy Test?
    • Your IC
    • Appointment confirmation email if you booked online
    • CHAS, Pioneer or Merdeka card if applicable
What are the most common allergens?
While the common allergens cannot be generalised as food allergies are individualised, gluten, egg white, dairy products and brewer’s/ baker’s yeast are very strong antigens which you absolutely have to avoid in case of an allergy.
Is there any need to be re-tested months down the line?
The production of antibodies is generally reduced through implementing the necessary diet changes as the antibodies are no longer created by the immune system when the diet is changed. The test would only need to be repeated if the symptoms were to reoccur, though this would be unlikely if you are keeping to your diet and rotation plan instructions. If the test is to be repeated it is recommended that two years elapse between tests.
My Doctor performed a standard allergy test on me. Will the result correspond to the result of the IgG Food Allergy Test?
Symptoms related to IgG food allergies may occur between 8 and 72 hours after the consumption of the offending food or additive. Standard allergy tests (like the skin prick/scratch test) are designed to detect classic IgE allergies (type I). They analyse immediate reactions to ingested food. Type I allergies are different to the delayed IgG allergies (type III) that the IgG Food Allergy test is looking for. Therefore, the results are not comparable.
