What is Andropause?

Andropause, or “male menopause”, is a term used to refer to a decline in testosterone levels as a result of aging. However, in comparison to menopause, where a female experiences a rapid plummeting of ovulation and hormone production, the decline in the production of testosterone in men happens over a longer period of time with less apparent symptoms.

When does Andropause happen?

Testosterone levels in men usually start falling in their 40s or 50s, gradually declining over many years. Do note that unlike menopause, not every man will experience andropause.

Symptoms of Andropause

Common symptoms of andropause include:

  • Depression
  • Loss of libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Mood swings and becoming easily irritated
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Reduced physical strength
  • Fat redistribution which manifests in the form of a large belly or gynaecomastia
  • Lack of energy
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Short-term memory

However, do note that these symptoms may not necessarily be caused by andropause. If the symptoms are serious enough that they interfere with your everyday life and happiness, it is advised that you consult a trusted healthcare professional who will be able to diagnose your condition and prescribe suitable treatment if needed.

Complications of Andropause

A long-term lack of testosterone as a result of andropause can lead to health complications. Complications may include:

  • Osteoporosis, due to weakened bones.
  • Metabolic syndrome, a condition involving abnormal cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, waistline obesity, and high blood sugar. This condition can increase your risk of heart attacks and strokes.
  • Diabetes. Low testosterone levels have been linked to diabetes, reduced response to insulin and insulin resistance.

Other Impacts of Andropause

Sexual Health

A man’s sexual health can be affected due to andropause. As a result of lowered testosterone levels, you may begin to lose interest in sexual activities. Even if your interest is not affected, you may find it difficult to have or sustain an erection, making it difficult to continue sexual activity.

Relationships

The symptoms of andropause may cause you to experience mood swings and irritability in general. In addition, andropause can affect your sexual health and performance, which may lead to lowered self-confidence or even depression. These factors may affect your relationship with your partner. It is important to recognise these symptoms and address them with your partner. Having your partner’s support as you adapt to these changes will help to smoothen the process and reduce its impact on your relationship.

Andropause Treatment and Relief

Andropause does not always result in serious disruptions to your lifestyle. If your symptoms of andropause are not severe, you can probably manage your symptoms without needing treatment. For patients with symptoms that are difficult to handle, it is ideal to seek a doctor’s advice. You may feel shy or ashamed to discuss your sexual health with a doctor, but delaying treatment can be detrimental to your current condition.

In general, making healthier lifestyle choices can help to alleviate symptoms for andropause. These may include:

  • Having a healthy diet
  • Exercising regularly, especially resistance and weight training
  • Having sufficient sleep
  • Reduce your stress

These lifestyle changes can make a great impact to your overall health.

For patients experiencing depression as a result of andropause, antidepressants or therapy may be prescribed to help with your condition.

Hormone replacement therapy may be a consideration. However, due to its side effects, it is rarely recommended. A discussion with a doctor regarding the risks and benefits of hormone replacement should be considered. If hormone replacement therapy is chosen, it is safer for a doctor to be involved in the monitoring of treatment and risk mitigation. For example, a prostate exam and monitoring blood tests should be done before the initiation of treatment. Different modalities may apply.

Consult a Doctor Regarding Your Condition

You should consult a doctor regarding your condition if you experience any symptoms for andropause. Through a physical examination and a blood test to check for your testosterone levels, your doctor will be able to better understand your current condition. This will help your doctor assess whether your symptoms are caused by andropause or by other underlying conditions. After your diagnosis, your doctor will be able to give you advice and prescribe any form of treatment if necessary.
