Urea Breath Test

Fast, Accurate Detection of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)
What Is the Urea Breath Test?
The Urea Breath Test is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic procedure that detects Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in the stomach. It is widely regarded as the gold standard for identifying active H. pylori infections, especially in patients experiencing chronic gastrointestinal discomfort.
It detects active H.Pylori infection, not just exposure. Has sensitivity and specificity >90%.
At Regis Medical, we provide the Urea Breath Test using MOH-aligned clinical protocols, ensuring accurate, timely results with minimal discomfort.
What Is H. pylori and Why Is It a Concern?
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a spiral-shaped bacterium that colonizes the lining of the stomach. It's estimated that up to 50% of the global population may carry H. pylori—often without any symptoms. However, in some individuals, this bacterium can trigger inflammation, erode the stomach lining, and lead to serious health issues if left untreated.
Potential Complications of H. pylori Infection
Chronic gastritis
Peptic ulcers (gastric or duodenal)
Persistent acid reflux and indigestion
Iron deficiency anemia
Increased risk of stomach (gastric) cancer
Relapse after treatment if not fully eradicated
Early detection and treatment are essential to prevent long-term complications and recurring digestive discomfort.
Symptoms of H. pylori Infection
Many individuals with H. pylori have no noticeable symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include:
Burning or gnawing stomach pain (often worse on an empty stomach)
Bloating or early fullness after eating
Nausea or frequent burping
Unexplained weight loss
Loss of appetite
Frequent acid reflux or heartburn
Dark or black stools (a possible sign of bleeding ulcers)
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms regularly, your doctor may recommend a Urea Breath Test to confirm H. pylori infection.
How the Urea Breath Test Works
The Urea Breath Test is a non-invasive diagnostic test that detects active H. pylori infection. It works by measuring how H. pylori breaks down a specially formulated urea compound.
Here’s how the test works:
You’ll drink a solution containing a harmless urea compound labeled with a special carbon molecule.
If H. pylori is present in your stomach, it will metabolize the urea and release carbon dioxide.
You’ll then exhale into a collection device. The carbon dioxide in your breath is analyzed for the labeled carbon.
A positive result confirms an active H. pylori infection.
Test Process and What to Expect
Fasting: No food or drink (except water) for 6 hours prior to the test
Duration: Approximately 30 to 45 minutes
Comfort: Completely non-invasive — no blood draw or sedation required
Results: Typically available within 1–3 working days
Who Should Consider a Urea Breath Test?
You may benefit from a Urea Breath Test if you:
Have persistent digestive symptoms like pain, bloating, nausea, or indigestion
Have been diagnosed with gastritis or peptic ulcers
Previously tested positive for H. pylori and need post-treatment confirmation
Have a family history of stomach (gastric) cancer
Prefer a non-invasive alternative to endoscopy, stool, or blood-based tests
