What is Diabetes

Diabetes is a complex metabolic disorder characterised by high blood sugar levels. It encompasses various types and stages, each requiring specific management approaches. Early detection, appropriate treatment, and lifestyle modifications are key to effectively managing diabetes and preventing complications.

Diabetes Management

Living with diabetes requires more than just managing blood sugar levels; it's about embracing a holistic approach to wellness. At Regis Medical, we're committed to providing comprehensive diabetes management services that empower you to take control of your health and live your best life.

Pre-diabetes: Pre-diabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes. It is a critical stage where intervention through lifestyle changes can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes results from the immune system attacking and destroying insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Individuals with Type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin therapy to regulate blood sugar levels.

Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. It is often associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and poor dietary habits.

Diabetes in Young Adults: Diabetes can affect individuals of all ages, including young adults. Early onset diabetes in young adults may present unique challenges and require specialized management approaches.

Gestational Diabetes: Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and can increase the risk of complications for both the mother and the baby. Proper management, including blood sugar monitoring and dietary modifications, is essential to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Insulin Pump Therapy: Insulin pump therapy delivers insulin continuously throughout the day, mimicking the function of a healthy pancreas. It offers greater flexibility in insulin dosing and can improve blood sugar control for individuals with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Frequent Urination: Excessive urination, especially at night (nocturia), as the body tries to rid itself of excess sugar through urine.

Excessive Thirst: Persistent thirst, even after drinking fluids, due to dehydration caused by frequent urination.

Unexplained Weight Loss: Sudden or unexplained weight loss, despite increased appetite, as the body breaks down muscle and fat for energy when cells are unable to absorb glucose.

Fatigue: Persistent tiredness or weakness, often due to the body's inability to properly utilize glucose for energy.

Blurred Vision: Vision changes, such as blurred vision or difficulty focusing, caused by fluctuating blood sugar levels affecting the eye's lens.

Slow Healing: Slow wound healing, frequent infections, or recurrent yeast infections, as high blood sugar levels impair the immune system's ability to fight off infections.

Tingling or Numbness: Tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands, feet, or extremities (diabetic neuropathy) due to nerve damage caused by high blood sugar levels over time.
