What Is a Herpes Test?

A Herpes Test detects the presence of the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which causes oral and genital herpes. There are two types:

• HSV-1 – Typically causes oral cold sores but can also affect the genitals
• HSV-2 – More commonly causes genital herpes

Many people carry the virus without symptoms, making testing important if you’ve had unprotected sex, new partners, or concerning symptoms.

What Types of Herpes Tests Are Available?

• Blood Test (IgG Antibodies for HSV-1 and HSV-2)
  Detects past or recent exposure
  Useful for people without visible symptoms
  Distinguishes between HSV-1 and HSV-2
• Swab Test (PCR from Lesions)
  Done only if sores or blisters are present
  Confirms active infection
  Most accurate during an outbreak
