What is a Shingles Vaccine
The Shingles Vaccine, also called the herpes zoster vaccine, is a vaccine used to protect against shingles.
Shingles is a painful skin rash caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus along one/multiple nerve roots. The shingles vaccine is designed to reduce the risk of developing shingles or to decrease the severity and duration of the rash.
Shingrix Vaccine
The Shingrix Vaccine provides strong protection against shingles. According to the CDC, the Shingrix Vaccine has an efficacy of 97% in adults 50 - 69 years old, and an efficacy of 91% in adults 70 years and above.
Shingrix Vaccine requires 2 doses. It is recommended for all adults above the age of 50.
The Shingles Vaccine is recommended generally for patients above 50 years old. Even if you had shingles before, received other shingles vaccine before, received varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, you should still take the Shingrix Vaccine.
Shingrix Price and Subsidy
Starting September 2025, the Shingrix vaccine will be subsidised by up to 75% for eligible Singaporeans, mainly those aged 60 years and above, as well as patients who have compromised immune systems between ages 18 to 59. Who Should Take the Shingles Vaccine
Shingles is a painful condition that can severely affect your quality of life. We recommend the following groups to get the Shingles vaccine:
- If you had chickenpox before
- If you had shingles before
- Adults aged 50 and older
- People with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease
Why is the Shingles Vaccine Important?
Shingles can lead to a painful skin rash, which may last for weeks and can sometimes cause long-term nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). The Shingles vaccine is important for:
- Prevention of Shingles: The primary purpose of the shingles vaccine is to prevent the occurrence of shingles. By getting vaccinated, you significantly reduce your risk of developing this painful condition.
- Reduction of Severity: If you do develop shingles after being vaccinated, the severity and duration of the symptoms are generally much less severe. This means less pain and discomfort and a quicker recovery time.
- Prevention of Complications: Shingles can lead to serious complications, especially in older adults. These can include PHN, vision loss if shingles affect the eyes, and neurological problems. The vaccine helps in reducing the risk of these complications.
- Boosting Immune Response: As people age, their immune system weakens, making them more susceptible to infections like shingles. The shingles vaccine boosts the immune response, providing protection that is crucial for older adults.

Transcript
Shingles, otherwise also known as 生蛇, is actually more common than people think. Close to one in three Singaporeans will get shingles in their lifetime, and most patients suffer the debilitating effects of this disease and get treatment late.
Hi, I'm Dr. Paul Chang from Regis Medical.
What is Shingles?
Shingles is a viral infection caused by the Varicella Zoster virus—the same virus that causes chickenpox. After recovering from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in your nerve cells and may reactivate later in life along the course of the nerve, causing a painful condition called shingles.
Shingles typically begins with a painful, blistering rash that appears rapidly on the skin. In the first few days, this rash can even be mistaken for eczema or dermatitis. The pain caused by shingles can be excruciating, with some describing it as an intense burning sensation. Even after the rash disappears, the pain may linger for weeks to months. Shingles can also lead to nerve damage and permanent scars.
Who is at risk?
Anyone who has had chickenpox can develop shingles. Individuals above 50, those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and people who have never had chickenpox are also at risk. Unfortunately, many cases of shingles go unnoticed or neglected, as symptoms may not always appear classic and can masquerade as other conditions such as dermatitis or simple itchiness.
Prevention
The good news is there is a way to protect yourself: the shingles vaccine Shingrix. Shingrix effectively boosts your immune system’s response to the Varicella Zoster virus and can significantly reduce the risk of getting shingles.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all adults above 50 get the shingles vaccine—even if they have had shingles before. You should also get vaccinated if you have had chickenpox in the past, are unsure about your chickenpox history, or cannot recall your shingles vaccination record.
Protect yourself and your loved ones with the shingles vaccine at Regis Medical. We wish you and your family good health.
