About Colorectal Cancer Screening
At Regis Medical, we believe that proactive healthcare is the key to a longer, healthier life. As medical science continues to innovate, the importance of early detection in combating serious illnesses remains paramount.
Colorectal cancer, which includes both colon and rectal cancers, is a significant health concern in Singapore. It is the most common cancer among men and the second most common among women in the country. The incidence of colorectal cancer has been rising, largely due to lifestyle factors and an aging population. Early detection is crucial, especially for individuals over the age of 50 or those with a family history of colorectal cancer.
Types of Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer encompasses several types of cancer that can affect different parts of the colon or rectum. Understanding these types can help in early detection and treatment:
- Adenocarcinomas: This is the most common type, accounting for about 95% of colorectal cancers. It begins in the mucus-producing glands lining the colon and rectum.
- Carcinoid Tumors: These are slow-growing tumors that start in the hormone-producing cells of the intestines.
- Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs): These rare tumors start in the special cells in the wall of the colon known as interstitial cells of Cajal.
- Lymphomas: Although more common in lymph nodes, lymphomas can start in the colon or rectum.
- Sarcomas: These are rare and begin in the blood vessels, muscle layers, or connective tissues of the colon and rectum.
LucenceINSIGHT™ Cancer Screening
LucenceINSIGHT™ is a multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test that screens for the signal of 50 cancers through a simple blood draw, including Colorectal Cancer. It leverages proprietary technology to amplify and identify signs of ctDNA and viruses in the bloodstream. The advanced sequencing analysis predicts signal localisation.
How Does It Screen for Colorectal Cancer
LucenceINSIGHT™ blood test can detect early signs of Colorectal cancer. The test analyses a small sample of blood to detect genetic alterations specific to cancer cells. These mutations shed DNA into the bloodstream, allowing for early detection and monitoring of Colorectal cancer.
Alternative to CEA: An Accurate Option for Early Detection
The Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) test, initially a tool used to monitor recurrence in cancer patients, then repurposed in health screening packages, has certain limitations, particularly in its use for early detection. Its sensitivity and specificity can be variable, potentially leading to false-positive or false-negative results. This can be especially problematic in the early stages of the disease when early detection is paramount.
For patients who have not yet been diagnosed with cancer, the LucenceINSIGHT™ Cancer Screening test may offer a valuable alternative for early detection of colorectal cancer. By detecting specific genetic alterations within cancer cells, it aims to provide a more accurate and sensitive approach to screening.
It is important to note that no medical test is perfect, and patients should discuss their options with their healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate screening strategy for their individual needs.

Why Cancer Screening is Important
Cancer screening is an essential part of preventive healthcare. It involves looking for cancer before a person has any symptoms. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat or cure. Regular screenings can lead to early detection of cancers, significantly increasing the chances of successful treatment and survival.
Here are some reasons why cancer screening should be a vital part of your health routine:
Early Detection Saves Lives: Detecting cancer at an early stage can make a significant difference. For many types of cancer, early detection through screening is associated with a higher rate of successful treatment and survival. For instance, the five-year survival rate for early-detected colorectal cancer is significantly higher than when detected at a later stage.
Improved Treatment Options: When cancer is found early, treatment options are often less aggressive and more effective. This can lead to a better quality of life during and after treatment.
Cost-Effective: Early-stage cancer treatments are generally less expensive than treatments for advanced-stage cancer. Regular screenings can save you from the financial burden of extensive treatments.
Prevention: In some cases, screenings can detect precancerous conditions that can be treated before they turn into cancer, effectively preventing cancer from developing.
Who Are Recommended to Screen for Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer screening is particularly recommended for certain groups of individuals who are at higher risk for the disease.
These groups include:
Individuals Aged 50 and Older: The risk of colorectal cancer increases with age, so individuals aged 50 and above are generally advised to consider regular screening.
Individuals with a Family History: Those with a family history of colorectal cancer, particularly if close relatives like a parent or sibling were diagnosed at a younger age, should begin screening earlier, often around age 45 or even 40.
Smokers or Former Smokers: Individuals who smoke or have a history of smoking are at a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer and should consider regular screening. It is important to discuss individual risk factors and the potential benefits and risks of screening with our doctors to make an informed decision about when to start and how often to screen for colorectal cancer.

How to Prepare for Your Cancer Screening
Colorectal cancer screening at Regis Medical is conducted with a blood test. We will draw a small sample of blood from you.
You may continue to consume food and water. No fasting is required prior to your cancer screening.
Things to Take Note for Your Cancer Screening
Cancer screening screens for cancer signals, it does not diagnose cancer directly. Further diagnostics are recommended if the signals are abnormal.
Cancer screening does not screen for inherited risk of cancers from family members.
Although cancer screening detects early signals, as with every laboratory test, there will be a small error rate. Our Doctors will counsel you in detail on this error rate and clinical implications.

About Lucence Cancer Test
The Lucence Cancer Blood Test, also known as a liquid biopsy, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that detects circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) in the bloodstream to identify genetic mutations associated with cancer.
The test analyses a small sample of blood to detect genetic alterations specific to cancer cells. These mutations shed DNA into the bloodstream, allowing for early detection and monitoring of cancer.
It can detect various types of cancer, including but not limited to breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, and others where specific genetic mutations are known, up to 50 cancers.
You should consider Lucence Cancer Blood Test if you are above the age of 40, not pregnant, or especially if you have high risk factors such as family history and smoking.
