About Colorectal Cancer Screening

At Regis Medical, we believe that proactive healthcare is the key to a longer, healthier life. As medical science continues to innovate, the importance of early detection in combating serious illnesses remains paramount.

Colorectal cancer, which includes both colon and rectal cancers, is a significant health concern in Singapore. It is the most common cancer among men and the second most common among women in the country. The incidence of colorectal cancer has been rising, largely due to lifestyle factors and an aging population. Early detection is crucial, especially for individuals over the age of 50 or those with a family history of colorectal cancer.

Comparing Your Options

Test Type Pros Cons
Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT)
  • Non-invasive, stool-based test.
  • Affordable (free at polyclinics and selected clinics).
  • Detect early biomarker signals of cancer, including Colorectal Cancer
  • Requires dietary restrictions for 3 days before testing.
  • Requires two separate stool samples, low accuracy.
  • Only detects blood, not cancer, requiring follow-up colonoscopy.
CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen) Test
  • Simple blood test, non-invasive.
  • Useful for monitoring patients already diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
  • Relatively affordable ($50 - $150).
  • Not recommended for early screening due to low sensitivity.
  • Elevated levels can be caused by non-cancerous conditions, low accuracy.
  • Low accuracy in detecting colorectal cancer before symptoms appear.
Colonoscopy
  • Gold standard for colorectal cancer screening.
  • Can remove polyps during the procedure.
  • Highly accurate for detecting colorectal cancer.
  • Invasive procedure with potential complications.
  • Requires bowel preparation and sedation.
  • More expensive than non-invasive tests.

LucenceINSIGHT™ Cancer Screening

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common and deadly cancers in Singapore. Early detection is crucial, as it significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. While traditional screening methods such as stool tests and colonoscopy have been widely used, many individuals find them inconvenient, invasive, or uncomfortable.

LucenceINSIGHT, a blood test, offers a modern, non-invasive, and highly accurate alternative for colorectal cancer screening. This test detects circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) in the blood, allowing for early cancer detection without the need for stool collection, dietary restrictions, or invasive procedures.

*Sensitivity refers to a test’s ability to correctly identify individuals who have a disease. It is the proportion of true positives among those who actually have the condition. A highly sensitive test minimises false negatives, ensuring that most affected individuals are detected.

*Specificity refers to a test’s ability to correctly identify individuals who do not have a disease. It is the proportion of true negatives among those who are disease-free. A highly specific test minimizes false positives, ensuring that healthy individuals are not mistakenly classified as having the disease.

Things to Take Note for Your Cancer Screening

LucenceINSIGHT Cancer screening screens for cancer signals, it does not diagnose cancer directly. Further diagnostics are recommended if the signals are abnormal.

Cancer screening does not screen for inherited risk of cancers from family members.

Although cancer screening detects early signals, as with every laboratory test, there will be a small error rate. Our Doctors will counsel you in detail on this error rate and clinical implications.

Why Cancer Screening is Important

Cancer screening is an essential part of preventive healthcare. It involves looking for cancer before a person has any symptoms. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat or cure. Regular screenings can lead to early detection of cancers, significantly increasing the chances of successful treatment and survival.

Here are some reasons why cancer screening should be a vital part of your health routine:

Early Detection Saves Lives: Detecting cancer at an early stage can make a significant difference. For many types of cancer, early detection through screening is associated with a higher rate of successful treatment and survival. For instance, the five-year survival rate for early-detected colorectal cancer is significantly higher than when detected at a later stage.

Improved Treatment Options: When cancer is found early, treatment options are often less aggressive and more effective. This can lead to a better quality of life during and after treatment.

Cost-Effective: Early-stage cancer treatments are generally less expensive than treatments for advanced-stage cancer. Regular screenings can save you from the financial burden of extensive treatments.

Prevention: In some cases, screenings can detect precancerous conditions that can be treated before they turn into cancer, effectively preventing cancer from developing.

Who Are Recommended to Screen for Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer screening is particularly recommended for certain groups of individuals who are at higher risk for the disease.

These groups include:

Individuals Aged 50 and Older: The risk of colorectal cancer increases with age, so individuals aged 50 and above are generally advised to consider regular screening.

Individuals with a Family History: Those with a family history of colorectal cancer, particularly if close relatives like a parent or sibling were diagnosed at a younger age, should begin screening earlier, often around age 45 or even 40.

Smokers or Former Smokers: Individuals who smoke or have a history of smoking are at a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer and should consider regular screening. It is important to discuss individual risk factors and the potential benefits and risks of screening with our doctors to make an informed decision about when to start and how often to screen for colorectal cancer.
