Full Blood Count (FBC) Test

Monitor Your Overall Health With One Simple Blood Test

What Is a Full Blood Count (FBC) Test?

A Full Blood Count (FBC), also known as a Complete Blood Count (CBC), is a common blood test that provides vital insights into your general health. It measures the levels of red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets — helping detect signs of infection, anemia, inflammation, blood disorders, or underlying medical conditions.

A full blood count test measures:

Red Blood Cells (RBC)  - Carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body

Haemoglobin (Hb)Protein in red blood cells that binds oxygen — low levels may indicate anemia

Hematocrit (HCT)Percentage of blood volume made up by red blood cells

White Blood Cells (WBC)Part of your immune system — raised levels may indicate infection or inflammation

PlateletsHelp your blood clot. Too few or too many can signal a bleeding or clotting disorder

Who Should Consider an Full Blood Count Test?

You may consider doing a FBC if you:

  • Feel persistently tired, weak, or dizzy
  • Have signs of infection (fever, chills, frequent illness)
  • Are experiencing unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Have ongoing inflammation or suspected autoimmune issues
  • Are undergoing treatment for cancer or other chronic conditions

Also, our Doctors at Regis Medical may order a FBC as part of evaluating your symptoms in acute or chronic medical situations.

Common Issues Detected

A FBC test is usually the first step in detecting the following

  • Anaemia (low red blood cells or haemoglobin)
  • B12/Folate Deficiency
  • Possible Thyroid Issues
  • High White Blood Cell Count may signal ongoing infection or malignancy, and further classification of subtypes may give further clues for diagnosis
  • Low Platelets may be present in Dengue Fever
  • If a peripheral blood film (PBF) is done as well, the presence of certain cells in the blood film also give further clues for more accurate diagnosis

General

What conditions can a FBC test help detect?
An FBC may help detect:
  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
  • Infections (bacterial or viral)
  • Leukaemia or bone marrow disorders
  • Thrombocytopenia (low platelets)
  • Chronic inflammation or autoimmune conditions
How is the FBC test done?
It’s a simple blood test, usually taken from a vein in your arm. The process takes just a few minutes.
Do I need to fast before the test?
No fasting is required for a standard FBC. However, if you're also doing other blood tests (e.g. cholesterol or glucose), fasting may be required.
What do low haemoglobin or RBC levels mean?
They may indicate anaemia, which can be caused by:
  • Iron or vitamin deficiency
  • Blood loss
  • Chronic disease
  • Bone marrow problems
What do high WBC levels mean?
This could indicate:
  • A bacterial infection
  • Inflammation
  • Stress response
  • Rarely, blood cancers such as leukaemia
Can the test tell if I have an infection?
Yes, an elevated white blood cell count, especially specific types (like neutrophils or lymphocytes), may indicate an active infection. Our doctor will interpret the results based on your symptoms.
Can I do this test even if I feel well?
Yes — FBC is part of many routine health screenings to detect silent issues before symptoms appear.
What affects FBC results?
Results can be influenced by:
  • Recent illness or infection
  • Dehydration
  • Medications (e.g. chemotherapy, steroids)
  • Menstruation or pregnancy
Always inform our doctor of any medications or health conditions.
