Kidney Function Test

Check Your Kidney Health with a Simple Blood Test
What Is a Kidney Function Test?
A Kidney Function Test assesses how well your kidneys are filtering waste, balancing fluids, and regulating key minerals in your body. It involves a blood test (for markers like creatinine and urea) and sometimes a urine test (for protein or abnormalities).
The kidneys play a vital role in your overall health—but kidney disease often develops silently, with few symptoms in the early stages. Routine testing helps detect problems early, before they progress.
At Regis Medical, we offer quick, accurate kidney testing with doctor consultation and follow-up recommendations.
What’s Included in a Kidney Function Test?
Blood Test Components:
- Creatinine – Measures waste product filtered by the kidneys
- Urea – Reflects nitrogen waste in the blood
- eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) – Indicates how well your kidneys are filtering
- Electrolytes – Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Bicarbonate (for fluid balance and nerve function)
Optional Add-ons:
- Urine Test (Urinalysis) – Detects protein, blood, or other abnormalities
- Microalbumin Test – Sensitive test for early kidney damage in diabetics
- Calcium and Phosphate – Related to kidney-related bone health
Why Is Kidney Testing Important?
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is common in Singapore, especially among adults with diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol. In early stages, kidney damage causes no symptoms—but once lost, kidney function cannot be fully restored.
You should consider testing if you:
- Have diabetes or high blood pressure (part of regular monitoring)
- Have a family history of kidney disease
- Experience fatigue, leg swelling, frothy urine or frequent urination
- Are on medications that may affect kidneys (e.g. painkillers, antibiotics, supplements)
- Have had abnormal urine tests or blood pressure readings
Symptoms That May Indicate Kidney Problems
- Swelling in ankles, feet, or face
- Fatigue or shortness of breath
- Foamy or bloody urine
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- High blood pressure
- Nausea, poor appetite
- Difficulty concentrating or mental fog
Don’t wait for symptoms—early testing allows for earlier lifestyle or treatment interventions.
Test Process and Turnaround
- Sample type: Blood draw (recommended to send together with urine samples)
- Fasting: Not required, unless combined with other panels
- Duration: 10–15 minutes
- Result time: Typically ready within 3 working days
- Consultation: Includes doctor review, lifestyle tips, and referrals if needed

- Have high blood pressure or diabetes
- Have a family history of kidney disease
- Are on long-term medications that may affect the kidneys (like NSAIDs, some antibiotics)
- Have swelling in your legs, foamy urine, or unexplained fatigue
A renal panel is a group of blood tests that assess how well your kidneys are working. It typically measures:
- Creatinine & eGFR: main markers of kidney filtering function
- Blood urea nitrogen (BUN): another waste product level
- Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate): to see how well your kidneys balance salts and acids
eGFR stands for estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate. It’s calculated from your creatinine, age, sex, and sometimes race, and gives an estimate of how well your kidneys filter waste.
- Above 90: normal
- 60–89: mild reduction (often age-related)
- Below 60: may indicate chronic kidney disease (CKD), needing further assessment
It’s a painless scan using sound waves to create images of your kidneys and bladder. It helps detect:
- Kidney size & shape changes (like cysts or scarring)
- Kidney stones
- Blockages or swelling (hydronephrosis)
- Some tumors
