Liver Function Test

Check Your Liver Health with a Simple Blood Test

What Is a Liver Function Test?

A Liver Function Test is a blood test that assesses how well your liver is working. It measures levels of enzymes, proteins, and substances that indicate liver inflammation, damage, or impaired function.

The liver plays a critical role in digestion, metabolism, detoxification, and hormone balance. Subtle liver issues often show no early symptoms, so routine screening is key to early detection and prevention.

At Regis Medical, we offer quick, accurate liver function testing with doctor review and personalised health advice.

What Does the Test Measure?

Our liver panel includes the following markers:

  • ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase): Indicates liver cell damage
  • AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase): Also reflects liver or muscle damage
  • ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase): Linked to bile ducts, liver, and bone
  • GGT (Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase): Sensitive to bile flow and alcohol-related damage
  • Total & Direct Bilirubin: Measures liver's ability to process waste
  • Albumin & Total Protein: Reflects overall liver function and nutritional status

Why Get a Liver Function Test?

Liver problems are often silent. You may not feel unwell until the damage is significant. Early detection can prevent complications such as cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer.

You should get tested if you:

  • Have persistent fatigue, abdominal discomfort, or bloating
  • Consume alcohol regularly
  • Are overweight or have fatty liver risk factors
  • Have a family history of liver disease or hepatitis
  • Are on long-term medications (e.g. statins, painkillers, psychiatric drugs, PrEP)
  • Are monitoring hepatitis B/C status or treatment response
  • Have unexplained skin itching, yellowing, or dark urine

Symptoms That May Suggest Liver Issues

  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Nausea, bloating, or poor appetite
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
  • Dark-colored urine or pale stools
  • Swelling in abdomen or legs
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Itchy skin with no rash
  • Unexplained weight loss

If you experience any of these, a liver test is strongly recommended.

After Your Tests

Once your liver tests is completed, here is what you can expect:

How You’ll Receive Results

  • Turnaround time: Results are typically ready within 2–5 working days, depending on the tests.
  • Secure delivery: Your results will be sent via WhatsApp or email once available. If follow-up is required, our clinic will contact you to arrange a consultation.

What the Results Mean

  • Normal results: If your liver enzymes and other markers are within the normal range, no treatment may be required. Our doctor may still suggest routine monitoring, especially if you have risk factors such as alcohol use, fatty liver, or chronic medication use.
  • Abnormal results: Elevated or abnormal readings may indicate liver inflammation, infection, fatty liver disease, medication effects, or other underlying conditions. In such cases, we will arrange a review session to explain your results and discuss further investigations or treatment.

Confidentiality

  • Your test results are handled with the highest level of confidentiality and shared only with you.

Next Steps & Ongoing Care

  • Lifestyle advice: Our doctor may provide guidance on diet, alcohol reduction, weight management, and exercise to support liver health.
  • Repeat testing: Sometimes, repeat LFTs are recommended to confirm results or monitor progress after lifestyle changes or treatment.
  • Additional investigations: If abnormalities persist, further tests such as viral hepatitis screening, ultrasound imaging, or extended blood panels may be suggested.
  • Specialist referral: For more serious or complex cases (e.g., suspected hepatitis, cirrhosis, or chronic liver disease), our doctor will refer you to a trusted hepatologist or gastroenterologist.
  • Preventive care: Vaccination for Hepatitis A and B, along with regular health screenings, may also be advised as part of protecting your long-term liver health.
