Mole Check & Skin Cancer Screening

Worried about a mole that looks different?
Get peace of mind with a professional mole check. Our GP-led skin screening service helps detect warning signs of skin cancer early, when it’s easiest to treat.
Why Check Your Moles?
Moles are common and usually harmless. But some can change over time and become cancerous, particularly in Singapore’s year-round sun exposure.
Skin cancers, especially melanoma, can start in a mole. Early detection is critical, as melanoma can spread quickly if left untreated.
You should consider a mole check if you notice:
- A new or rapidly growing mole
- Changes in size, colour, or border
- A mole that bleeds, itches, or becomes crusty
- A mole that looks different from others ("ugly duckling")
- A family or personal history of skin cancer
- Fair skin, sunburns, or high UV exposure history

What Happens During a Mole Check?
Our doctor will conduct a focused visual inspection of any moles you are concerned about, using clinical tools and dermoscopy if needed.
The Screening Includes:
- Review of mole history and changes
- Visual inspection of suspicious moles
- Education on mole monitoring & sun safety
- Referral to dermatologist or biopsy if needed
You’ll receive medical advice tailored to your skin type and risk profile. Most moles are benign, but if a mole looks suspicious, early referral ensures faster diagnosis and treatment.
What We Look For: The ABCDE Rule
Our Doctors use the ABCDE checklist to assess moles for warning signs of melanoma:
- A – Asymmetry: one half is unlike the other
- B – Border: irregular, blurred, or jagged edges
- C – Colour: multiple shades or uneven colouring
- D – Diameter: larger than 6mm (pencil eraser size)
- E – Evolving: changes in size, shape, or symptoms
Any one of these signs is a reason to get your mole checked.
When Should You Get a Mole Check?
You should see a doctor if:
- A mole changes suddenly in shape, size, or feel
- You have multiple atypical moles
- You’ve had excessive sun exposure or used tanning beds
- You have a family history of melanoma or skin cancer
- You simply want reassurance for your peace of mind
Annual mole checks are recommended for individuals at higher risk.

General
Doctors use the ABCDE rule to assess risk:
- A – Asymmetry: one half doesn’t match the other
- B – Border: edges are irregular, blurred, or jagged
- C – Colour: uneven colouring or multiple shades
- D – Diameter: larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)
- E – Evolving: changing size, shape, colour, or symptoms
Other red flags include itching, bleeding, or crusting.
Our Doctors will:
- Review your personal and family history of moles and skin cancer
- Conduct a visual examination of the mole(s)
- Use a dermatoscope (a magnifying tool) if needed
- Provide education on mole monitoring and sun safety
- Advise if referral or biopsy is required
The process is non-invasive and usually takes just a few minutes per mole.
Our service is a focused mole check. If you have many atypical moles or significant risk factors, the doctor may recommend a full-body skin exam or referral to a dermatologist for closer monitoring. In some cases, we can also take photographs to track changes over time.
Risk factors include:
- Fair skin or a history of frequent sunburns
- Family or personal history of melanoma or skin cancer
- Multiple or atypical moles
- Extensive sun or tanning bed exposure
- Weakened immune system
If you fall into these groups, an annual mole check is recommended.
Check your skin regularly under good lighting. Take note of any new or changing moles and apply the ABCDE rule. Photographing moles every few months can also help you track changes. Always seek medical advice if you notice rapid changes.
- Use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily, even on cloudy days
- Wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing outdoors
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak hours (10am–4pm)
- Do regular mole self-checks and attend medical screenings as advised
If your mole is found to be cancerous, early treatment options such as surgical removal are highly effective. Our Doctors will coordinate referral to a dermatologist or specialist promptly so you get the right care without delay.
