Breathe Easier with Doctor-Led Asthma Care

What Is Asthma?

Asthma is a long-term respiratory disease where the airways are extra sensitive to triggers like dust, smoke, pollen, exercise, or infections. When exposed, the airways become swollen and produce excess mucus, leading to breathing difficulties.

Common symptoms: Wheezing, chronic cough, tight chest, shortness of breath.

Triggers: Dust mites, cold air, pollution, stress, physical activity, viral infections.

Who is affected: Asthma can develop in both children and adults, even without family history.

With the right treatment plan and medication, asthma can be controlled, allowing you to live an active, normal life. At Regis Medical GP clinic, we provide comprehensive asthma management tailored to your condition and lifestyle, from diagnosis to long-term monitoring.

Why Asthma Treatment Matters

Uncontrolled asthma can limit your daily life and, in severe cases, become life-threatening. Proper treatment reduces flare-ups, prevents hospital visits, and protects long-term lung health.

  • Prevents serious asthma attacks
  • Reduces risk of airway damage and complications
  • Improves energy levels, sleep, and exercise tolerance
  • Helps children grow and develop normally

Asthma Medications We Prescribe

Our doctors will review your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate medication:

Reliever Inhalers (Short-Acting Beta-Agonists, e.g., Salbutamol/Ventolin®)  - Provide quick relief during asthma attacks by relaxing airway muscles.

Controller Inhalers (Inhaled Corticosteroids, ICS)Daily medication that reduces inflammation in the airways and prevents symptoms.

Combination Inhalers (ICS + Long-Acting Beta-Agonists, LABA)For moderate to severe asthma, these inhalers control symptoms long-term while reducing flare-ups.

Oral Medications  - A short course of Oral Corticosteroids may be prescribed for a moderate to severe asthma flare

What Causes Asthma?

Asthma doesn’t have a single cause, it usually develops from a mix of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Some people are born with a higher sensitivity in their airways, while others develop asthma later in life due to repeated exposure to triggers.

Key contributors to asthma include:

  • Genetics & Family History: If one or both parents have asthma or allergies, the risk is significantly higher.
  • Allergies & Immune Response: People with hay fever, eczema, or allergic rhinitis are more prone to asthma, as the immune system is already hypersensitive.
  • Environmental Triggers: Long-term exposure to pollution, cigarette smoke, dust mites, mould, or strong chemicals can irritate the airways.
  • Respiratory Infections: Frequent chest infections during childhood may damage or “prime” the airways to overreact.
  • Occupational Factors: Some adults develop asthma from workplace irritants such as industrial dust, fumes, or chemicals.
  • Lifestyle & Other Risks: Obesity, chronic stress, and lack of physical activity may worsen airway inflammation and asthma symptoms.

Asthma often results from a combination of these factors, which is why doctor-led assessment is essential to identify your specific triggers and create a personalised management plan.

General

What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic condition where the airways become inflamed and narrow, making breathing difficult. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Triggers commonly include dust mites, cold air, smoke, pollen, exercise, stress, and viral infections.

Why is asthma treatment important?

Proper treatment controls symptoms, reduces flare-ups, and protects long-term lung function. Effective management lowers the risk of urgent visits and hospitalisation, improves sleep and exercise tolerance, and helps children grow and develop normally.

What asthma medications do you prescribe?

Treatment is tailored to your severity and triggers. Options include: (Coming soon)

  • Reliever inhalers (SABA, e.g., Salbutamol/Ventolin) — rapid relief during attacks by relaxing airway muscles.
  • Controller inhalers (inhaled corticosteroids, ICS) — daily anti-inflammatory therapy to prevent symptoms.
  • Combination inhalers (ICS + LABA) — for moderate to severe asthma to reduce flare-ups long term.
  • Oral medications — leukotriene receptor antagonists (e.g., montelukast) where appropriate.
  • Nebuliser treatment — for acute episodes or young children who struggle with inhalers.
How do you diagnose and monitor asthma?

Our doctor reviews symptoms and triggers, examines your chest, and may perform lung function tests if required. Follow-up includes assessing symptom control, inhaler technique, reliever use, and adjusting treatment.

Do I need a spacer with my inhaler?

Spacers improve medication delivery to the lungs and reduce throat side effects for pressurised metered-dose inhalers. They are recommended for many patients, especially children and anyone starting on inhaled corticosteroids. We can demonstrate correct use in clinic.

Are inhaled steroids safe?

Inhaled corticosteroids act directly in the lungs and use much lower doses than oral steroids. They are the cornerstone of long-term control. Rinsing your mouth and using a spacer help minimise throat irritation or hoarseness. Your doctor will use the lowest effective dose and review regularly.

Can I exercise if I have asthma?

Yes. With good control, most people can exercise normally. If you have exercise-induced symptoms, your plan may include a warm-up routine, trigger avoidance, and pre-exercise reliever use when advised. Regular physical activity can improve lung fitness and overall health.

What lifestyle steps help control asthma?
  • Avoid or reduce exposure to known triggers (dust mites, smoke, mould, strong chemicals).
  • Use inhalers exactly as prescribed, even when well.
  • Maintain a healthy weight and stay active.
  • Get annual flu vaccination and recommended vaccines to prevent respiratory infections.
  • Consider home peak-flow monitoring if advised to track control.
When should I see a doctor for asthma?

Book a consult if you have frequent night-time cough/wheeze, need your reliever more than twice a week, have persistent symptoms despite treatment, are newly diagnosed and need device training, or if a child has repeated coughing/wheezing episodes.

When is asthma an emergency?

Seek urgent care if you are struggling to speak in full sentences, your reliever provides little or no relief, your lips or face look bluish, your peak flow is in the red zone, or symptoms are rapidly worsening. Use your action plan while arranging emergency help.

Do you offer allergy testing or vaccination support?

We provide holistic care and can arrange allergy screening where indicated. We also advise on and administer relevant vaccinations (e.g., influenza) to reduce infection-related flare-ups.

Can children be treated at your clinic?

Yes. We assess paediatric symptoms, demonstrate child-friendly inhaler and spacer techniques, and tailor medication and follow-up to your child’s age and needs. Nebuliser options are available when suitable.
