Hepatitis B Testing

Hepatitis B is a common but often silent liver infection in Singapore. Many people don’t know they have it until complications arise. Early detection through a simple blood test can help prevent liver damage and protect your loved ones.

What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). Chronic Hepatitis B can lead to serious complications like liver cirrhosis or liver cancer if left untreated.

The virus spreads through blood and bodily fluids. In Singapore, it is commonly transmitted:

  • At birth (mother to child)
  • Through sexual contact
  • Via shared needles or unsterile tattoo/piercing tools
  • Through contact with infected blood

What Does a Hepatitis B Test Check For?

A Hepatitis B blood test checks for the presence of the virus or your immune response to it. It usually includes:

  • HBsAg (Hepatitis B surface antigen) – Indicates current infection
  • Anti-HBs (Hepatitis B surface antibody) – Indicates immunity from past infection or vaccination
  • Anti-HBc (Hepatitis B core antibody) – Indicates previous exposure

Our doctor may recommend additional liver function tests or viral load testing if needed.

Who Should Get Tested?

Hepatitis B testing is recommended for:

  • Individuals born before 1987 (before vaccination became routine in Singapore)
  • Those with family history of Hepatitis B or liver disease
  • Sexually active individuals with new or multiple partners
  • People who had blood transfusions or surgery before the 1990s
  • Healthcare workers or anyone exposed to blood
  • Pregnant women (part of routine prenatal screening)

What Happens If I Test Positive?

If your test shows active infection, our doctor will:

  • Order additional tests to assess liver health
  • Advise on regular monitoring or treatment (if needed)
  • Recommend steps to protect your family and partners

Most people with chronic Hepatitis B live full, healthy lives with regular follow-up.

General

How is Hepatitis B spread?

The virus is transmitted through:

  • Blood (e.g. shared needles, blood transfusions)
  • Unprotected sex
  • From mother to baby at birth
  • Sharing personal items like razors or toothbrushes

It is not spread through casual contact like hugging or sharing food.

Who should get tested for Hepatitis B?

You should consider testing if you:

  • Were born or lived in a country with high HBV rates (including parts of Asia)
  • Have unprotected sex with multiple partners
  • Are pregnant
  • Have abnormal liver function tests
  • Share needles or have a history of IV drug use
  • Live with or are a sexual partner of someone with hepatitis B
  • Are undergoing immunosuppressive therapy (e.g. chemotherapy)
Can I be infected and not have symptoms?

Yes. Many people, especially adults, may have no symptoms but can still pass the virus to others. That’s why screening is so important.

Can I test for Hepatitis B if I’ve already been vaccinated?

Yes. Your test will usually show positive Anti-HBs only, confirming immunity. No further vaccination is needed.

How long after exposure should I get tested
Hepatitis Virus can take 1 to 6 months to show up in blood. If recently exposed, you may need repeat testing after a few weeks.
Is Hepatitis B curable?
Chronic hepatitis B is not curable, but very manageable. Treatment can lower the virus level, protect your liver, and reduce the risk of complications.
Can I still live a normal life with Hepatitis B?
Yes. With regular monitoring and medical care, many people with Hepatitis B live long, healthy lives.
