What is Syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It develops in stages and can present with different signs and symptoms. In its early stages, symptoms may be very mild or unnoticed — yet this is when treatment is most effective. If left untreated, syphilis can progress and cause serious long-term health complications, including damage to the heart, brain, and other organs.

At our clinic, we provide accurate, confidential syphilis testing using internationally recognised blood tests. Whether you need testing due to symptoms, exposure concerns, or medical requirements, we ensure your care is private, professional, and supportive.

What is a Syphilis Test

Syphilis is commonly tested for using blood tests, often a combination of different types like VDRL, TPPA, and RPR. The STI develops in stages with different signs and symptoms. Symptoms are also generally hard to notice in the earlier stage, where treatment is the most effective. If left untreated, the STI can cause serious health complications.

You should get tested for syphilis if you:

  • Have multiple sexual partners or engage in casual sex
  • Experience STI symptoms
  • Are pregnant (as part of pregnancy screening)

The test is simple, accurate, and done in complete confidentiality at Regis Medical.

Who Should Get Tested for Syphilis?

You should consider a syphilis test if you:

  • Have multiple sexual partners or engage in casual sex
  • Notice possible STI symptoms such as sores or unusual rashes
  • Are pregnant, as part of routine prenatal screening
  • Have been informed that a partner has syphilis or another STI
  • Are living with HIV or another STI that increases the risk of co-infection

Symptoms of Syphilis by Stage

Symptoms of syphilis can vary and sometimes disappear between stages, giving the false impression of recovery. Common symptoms include:

Primary stage:

  • Small, painless sore (chancre) usually in the genital, anal, or oral area
  • Enlarged lymph nodes near the sore

Secondary stage:

  • Rash on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet
  • Fever, fatigue, or swollen glands
  • Patches in the mouth or genital area

Latent stage:

  • No visible symptoms, but the infection remains in the body

Tertiary stage (if untreated):

  • Damage to the heart, brain, nerves, and blood vessels
  • Neurological problems, vision loss, or organ failure

Because syphilis can remain hidden, routine testing is the only way to confirm infection.

Types of Syphilis Tests We Offer

1. Syphilis TP Antibody / RPR / VDRL Blood Test

Method: Blood sample sent to accredited laboratory

Tests included:

  • TP Antibody (Treponema pallidum antibody)
  • RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin)
  • VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test)
  • Purpose: Detects both current and past syphilis infections
  • Turnaround time: About 3 working days
  • Recommended for: Comprehensive diagnosis, medical screening, or confirmatory testing

2. Syphilis Point-of-Care (POC) Test

Method: Finger prick or small blood draw with rapid test kit

  • Purpose: Detects syphilis antibodies quickly
  • Turnaround time: Results available within 20–30 minutes
  • Recommended for: Fast screening, same-day reassurance, or if you cannot return for a follow-up visit

Note: Positive results will be confirmed with a laboratory test (RPR/VDRL/TP Antibody)

When to take the Syphilis test?

You should consider taking a syphilis test if you:
  • Have had unprotected sexual contact with someone who may have syphilis.
  • Have symptoms suggestive of syphilis, such as genital sores, skin rashes, or flu-like symptoms.
  • Are pregnant, as syphilis can be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy or childbirth.
  • Are entering into a new sexual relationship and want to ensure they are free from sexually transmitted infections.
  • Have been diagnosed with another sexually transmitted infection, as co-infection with syphilis is possible.

General

What is a Rapid Syphilis Point of Care Test?

It is a quick blood test that detects syphilis antibodies, providing results within 15–20 minutes. It allows Our Doctor to identify infections quickly and recommend treatment if needed. For confirmation, additional tests such as VDRL, RPR, or TPPA may be advised.

When should I get tested for syphilis?

You should get tested if you have had unprotected sex, notice symptoms such as painless sores or rashes, are pregnant, are starting a new relationship, or have been informed that your partner tested positive for syphilis or another STI.

What symptoms can syphilis cause?

Symptoms vary by stage but may include:

  • Painless sores around the genitals, anus, lips, or mouth
  • Rashes on the palms or soles
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fatigue, fever, or flu-like symptoms
In early stages, syphilis can be difficult to notice, which is why testing is important even without obvious symptoms.

How is the test done?

A small blood sample is taken, usually from a finger prick. The procedure is fast, minimally uncomfortable, and results are available in under 20 minutes.

Is the test accurate?

Yes, rapid syphilis tests are reliable for screening. However, in some cases, Our Doctor may recommend follow-up confirmatory tests for an accurate diagnosis.

Do I need to fast before the test?

No fasting or special preparation is needed. You can walk in or book a same day appointment.

How much does the syphilis test cost?

The Rapid Syphilis Point of Care Test costs $30 with results in 15–20 minutes. A standard syphilis blood test (TP Antibody / RPR / VDRL) is also available at $15 with results in about 3 days. Prices are in SGD, exclusive of GST. Consultation charges apply.

What happens if I test positive?

Our Doctor will prescribe antibiotic treatment, usually penicillin, and guide you on partner notification and follow-up testing. Early treatment is highly effective in curing syphilis and preventing complications.

Is testing confidential?

Yes. All consultations, test results, and records are strictly confidential at Regis Medical. Results are only shared with you and your attending doctor.

Can syphilis be cured?

Yes. Syphilis is fully curable with appropriate antibiotics when detected early. However, untreated syphilis can progress and cause long-term health problems, so timely testing and treatment are essential.
