What Is Typhoid Vaccine?

The Typhoid Vaccine helps prevent typhoid fever, a serious infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi. It is commonly spread through contaminated food or water, especially in regions with poor sanitation.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself against typhoid—especially if you're travelling to high-risk areas in Asia, Africa, or South America.

At Regis Medical, we offer doctor-guided typhoid vaccination with convenient appointments and travel health advice tailored to your itinerary.

General Enquiry

What is typhoid fever?

Typhoid fever is a serious infection caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi, usually spread through contaminated food or water. It can cause prolonged fever, abdominal pain, headache, and in severe cases, complications like intestinal bleeding.

Why do I need a typhoid vaccine before travelling?

Certain countries have a higher risk of typhoid due to sanitation and water quality. Getting vaccinated protects you against infection during travel, especially if visiting rural areas or places with limited clean water.

Which countries or regions have a higher risk of typhoid?

Risk is higher in parts of Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines), Africa, Central and South America, and some areas of the Middle East.

What types of typhoid vaccines are available?

Typhim Vi® Typhoid vaccine. Injectable vaccine – single injection, with protection up to 3 years.

How long before my trip should I get vaccinated?

Ideally, at least 2 weeks before travel to allow your body to develop protection.

Will I need a booster dose?

Yes. If you continue to travel to high-risk areas, a booster is recommended. Every 3 years for the injectable vaccine.

Is the typhoid vaccine safe?

Yes. The vaccines are generally well-tolerated. Millions have been vaccinated worldwide.

What if I have allergies?

If you’ve ever had a serious allergic reaction (like anaphylaxis) to a typhoid vaccine or to phenol (a component of this vaccine), you should not take it. Mild reactions like redness, swelling, or a low-grade fever are normal and not an allergy.

What are the possible side effects?
Most are mild and short-lived: soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, mild fever. Serious reactions are very rare.
Can Typhoid vaccine cause a severe allergic reaction?
It’s extremely rare. Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) are estimated to occur in fewer than 1 in a million doses. Regis Medical are prepared with emergency treatments just in case.
Can pregnant or breastfeeding women take the vaccine?

The injectable vaccine is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Does the typhoid vaccine guarantee 100% protection?

No. It reduces your risk significantly, but you still need to practice safe food and water habits. Always drink bottled or boiled water, eat food that is thoroughly cooked and still hot, and avoid raw salads in high-risk areas.

Can I take the typhoid vaccine at the same time as other travel vaccines?

Yes. It is often given together with vaccines like hepatitis A, hepatitis B, yellow fever, or tetanus, depending on your travel itinerary.

What if I’ve had typhoid before? Do I still need the vaccine?

Yes. Past infection does not guarantee lifelong immunity. Vaccination is still advised.

Can I take the typhoid vaccine if I’m on other medications?

Yes. There are no known interactions between Typhim Vi® and common medications. It’s safe to take if you’re on: Antibiotics, Antimalarial tablets (like doxycycline, Malarone, mefloquine), Chronic medications for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, or thyroid issues, Birth control pills or hormone therapy.

The only concern is if you’re on strong immune-suppressing treatments (like high-dose steroids, chemotherapy, or certain biologics). These won’t cause a harmful interaction, but they might reduce how well your body responds to the vaccine.
