Cortisol Level Test

Check for Stress, Adrenal Health & Hormonal Imbalance

What Is a Cortisol Test?

A Cortisol Test measures the amount of cortisol in your blood. Produced by the adrenal glands, cortisol regulates:

  • Energy production and metabolism
  • Blood pressure control
  • Immune system response
  • Sleep-wake cycle
  • Hormonal balance

Abnormal cortisol levels may indicate chronic stress, adrenal insufficiency, Cushing’s syndrome, or other hormone-related disorders.

At Regis Medical, your test includes:

  • GP consultation to assess symptoms and medical history
  • Quick blood draw (morning test recommended)
  • Personalised results interpretation and treatment plan

Cortisol is your body’s main stress hormone, it is vital for energy, immunity, and hormonal balance. But when levels are too high or too low, it can lead to fatigue, mood changes, weight issues, and more.

Regis Medical GP clinic in Singapore offers accurate cortisol testing to assess adrenal gland function, detect hormonal imbalances, and guide personalised treatment. Whether you’re struggling with chronic stress, unexplained symptoms, or suspected adrenal disorders, this simple blood test can give you answers.

Why Check Your Cortisol Levels?

High or low cortisol can cause a wide range of symptoms:

High Cortisol (Hypercortisolism) – Often linked to stress, steroid medication, or Cushing’s syndrome.

Symptoms:

  • Weight gain (especially around the abdomen or face)
  • High blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Acne or oily skin
  • Mood swings or anxiety
  • Muscle weakness
  • Slow wound healing

Low Cortisol (Hypocortisolism) – May be due to Addison’s disease or adrenal fatigue.

Symptoms:

  • Persistent fatigue
  • Low blood pressure and dizziness
  • Salt cravings
  • Weight loss
  • Low mood or depression
  • Nausea, abdominal pain
  • Darkening of the skin (Addison’s)

What Causes High or Low Cortisol Levels?

High Cortisol Levels may be caused by:

  • Chronic stress or anxiety
  • Long-term use of corticosteroid medications
  • Cushing’s syndrome or adrenal tumours
  • Severe illness or infection
  • Depression or certain mental health disorders

Low Cortisol Levels may be caused by:

  • Addison’s disease (adrenal insufficiency)
  • Pituitary gland disorders (reduced ACTH production)
  • Sudden withdrawal from long-term corticosteroid use
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Certain autoimmune diseases

Identifying the cause is key to effective treatment, which is why a Doctor's assessment is essential.

Who Should Consider a Cortisol Level Test?

A cortisol test is recommended if you:

  • Feel persistently tired or weak despite adequate rest
  • Have unexplained weight gain or weight loss
  • Struggle with ongoing stress or burnout symptoms
  • Experience high blood pressure or blood sugar fluctuations
  • Have irregular periods or fertility issues
  • Are on long-term steroid medication
  • Have darkening of the skin, salt cravings, or dizziness
  • Have been advised by your doctor to check adrenal or pituitary health

When Is a Cortisol Test Recommended?

Our Doctors may recommend a cortisol test if you:

  • Have persistent fatigue or sleep issues
  • Experience rapid weight changes
  • Suspect adrenal insufficiency or Cushing’s syndrome
  • Have high blood pressure or blood sugar fluctuations
  • Are on long-term steroid medication
  • Have abnormal results from other hormone tests

Why Cortisol Is Especially Important

Cortisol is your body’s main stress hormone, essential for regulating energy, blood pressure, immune function, and the stress response. Balanced cortisol levels keep you alert, resilient, and healthy, while persistent highs or lows levels can impact mood, weight, sleep, immunity, and overall well-being.

General

What is a Cortisol Level Test?
A cortisol test is a blood test that measures cortisol levels in your body. Cortisol is a hormone produced by your adrenal glands that helps regulate metabolism, stress response, and immune function.
Why is this test important?
Abnormal cortisol levels can indicate conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome (excess cortisol), Addison’s disease (low cortisol), adrenal gland disorders, or pituitary gland issues. It also helps evaluate chronic stress and fatigue.
How is the cortisol test done?
Most commonly, it’s a blood test taken in the morning (when cortisol is highest).
Can stress affect my cortisol test?
Yes. Emotional stress, illness, and poor sleep can temporarily raise cortisol levels. That’s why doctors may order more than one test at different times of the day.
What happens if my cortisol is abnormal?
If results are abnormal, our doctor may recommend follow-up tests to identify the underlying causes.
Is the cortisol test painful?
It’s a simple blood draw, so aside from a quick needle prick, discomfort is minimal. Saliva and urine tests are painless.
How often should I check my cortisol levels?
That depends on your condition. If you’re on treatment for adrenal or pituitary disorders, your doctor may recommend periodic monitoring. For general stress evaluation, testing is usually one-off unless symptoms persist.
