What is Japanese Encephalitis?

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is a potentially severe viral brain infection spread by mosquitoes, particularly in rural parts of Asia. While rare in short-term travellers, infection can lead to long-term neurological damage or even death in severe cases.

  • Caused by the Japanese Encephalitis virus (JEV)
  • Transmitted by the Culex mosquito, typically in rice fields or pig farming areas
  • There is no specific treatment once infected
  • Up to 30% of severe cases can result in death; others may suffer long-term neurological damage

What is the Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine?

The Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine we provide at Regis Medical is Imojev®, a modern and effective vaccine approved in Singapore.

About Imojev®:

  • Live attenuated vaccine

  • Single-dose protection

  • Protection for at least 10 years

  • Suitable for adults and children aged 9 months and above

  • May not be suitable for pregnant women, those with weakened immune systems, or individuals with certain allergies

Always inform our doctor of your medical history before receiving this vaccine.

Where Is Japanese Encephalitis a Risk?

Japanese Encephalitis is found in many parts of Asia and the Western Pacific. Risk varies depending on location, season, and travel activities. Regions where JE is endemic include:

  • Southeast Asia – Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines
  • East Asia – China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea
  • South Asia – India, Nepal, Sri Lanka
  • Australasia – Papua New Guinea, Northern Australia

High-risk areas include rural or agricultural zones, especially those with rice paddies, pig farming, or stagnant water — ideal mosquito breeding sites. Risk typically increases during the rainy or monsoon season, but transmission can occur year-round in tropical climates.

Is JE Vaccine Required for My Trip?

The Japanese Encephalitis vaccine is generally not mandatory for entry into any countries, but it is strongly recommended for certain types of travellers and destinations.

You may benefit from the vaccine if you:

  • Plan to stay in rural or agricultural areas (e.g. villages, rice fields, pig farms)

  • Will be spending time outdoors, especially for activities like hiking, biking, or camping

  • Are travelling during the rainy or mosquito season, when risk is highest

  • Will be in a high-risk country for more than 30 days

  • Are visiting an area with a known JE outbreak

  • Are bringing young children or have a weakened immune system

Even if your trip is less than 30 days, vaccination may still be advised if your itinerary includes:

  • Overnight stays in rural or outdoor settings

  • Exposure to standing water or livestock farms

  • Minimal use of air-conditioning or insect protection

  • Travel to endemic areas during peak transmission season

You may not need the vaccine if you:

  • Are staying only in urban cities

  • Will be in an endemic region for a short stay with no mosquito exposure

  • Are spending most of your time indoors or in air-conditioned environments

During your travel consult, our GP will review your destinations, activities, and health profile to determine if JE vaccination is advisable.

Always check with the destination embassy, CDC, or MOH Singapore for the latest requirements.

What Happens During the Appointment?

  • Pre-vaccination consultation to confirm your eligibility
  • Vaccination (single-dose, intramuscular injection)
  • Advice on side effects and post-vaccine precautions
  • You will need to remain in clinic for 15–30 minutes after vaccination for observation.
