What Is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is a serious, potentially life-threatening disease caused by a virus transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes and Haemagogus mosquitoes. It occurs primarily in tropical regions of Africa and South America.

In mild cases, symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

In severe cases, yellow fever can cause:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Internal bleeding
  • Organ failure
  • Death

There is no specific antiviral treatment, but the vaccine provides lifelong protection in most people.

Vaccine type: Live attenuated virus

Effective within: 10 days

Validity of Certificate: Lifetime (per WHO guidelines)
