Common causes of Wrist pain and discomfort:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist, often due to repetitive motions, overuse, or conditions like pregnancy or arthritis. Causes pain and numbness in the hand and wrist.
Wrist Tendinitis
Inflammation of the tendons in the wrist, typically from repetitive movements, overuse, or sudden increases in activity level. Causes pain and stiffness in the wrist.
De Quervain's Syndrome
Inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Causes pain and swelling at the base of the thumb. Learn more about De Quervain's syndrome treatment at Regis Medical.
Wrist Sprains
Injuries to the ligaments supporting the wrist joint. Cause pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the wrist. Wrist sprains are often caused by falling on an outstretched arm or hand, or abrupt twist or hyperextension of the wrist.
TFCC (Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex) Tear or Injury
Injuries to the cartilage and ligaments in the wrist. Results in pain, swelling, and clicking or popping sensations. TFCC tears typically occur from falling on your arm or hand, heavy force falling on your hand (e.g. bench press, shoulder press), twisting, or overrotating your wrist.
Wrist Arthritis
Both Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis can occur in the wrist, leading to pain and stiffness.
Mummy's Wrist
Mummy's wrist is common amongst new mums who need to perform repetitive tasks with their babies, such as picking up and holding their babies for long periods every day. Mummy's wrist is a form of tendinitis, resulting in pain, swelling, and inflammation in the wrist tendons.
When Wrist Pain Needs Urgent Care
Most wrist pain can be safely assessed and managed by our GP team. However, please seek medical attention promptly – or visit an Emergency Department – if you experience:
- Severe wrist pain after a fall, direct blow, or trauma with visible deformity
- Inability to move your wrist or hand at all
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hand or fingers
- Signs of infection such as redness, warmth, swelling, or fever
- Severe swelling that restricts blood flow (fingers turning pale or blue)
In the above instances, it would be highly recommended by doctors to rule out more serious wrist injuries through appropriate imaging, such as an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI, and for the patient to be assessed by an Emergency Physician or Orthopaedic Surgery Specialist before starting physiotherapy. Early identification of structural, traumatic, vascular, or infective causes of wrist pain is essential to ensure safe and effective treatment.
Wrist Pain Treatment and Pain Relief
Painkillers, injections, and surgery shouldn't be the only options for wrist pain relief. At Regis Medical, our doctors, acupuncturists, and physiotherapists work together – under one roof, at both our Holland Village and Katong clinics – to find and treat the root cause of your wrist pain.
GP Doctor Assessment
An evidence-based approach to diagnose, assess, and find the root cause of your wrist pain or wrist injury. By considering your medical history, lifestyle, and any contributing factors, so that we can tailor a personalised treatment plan to meet your unique needs.
Regular Progress Reviews and Post-Recovery Follow-Up
Regis Medical doctors will actively review your recovery progress in periodic fashion and help arrange for scans if necessary.
Acupuncture for Wrist Pain

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.
Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture may help relieve wrist pain, ease muscle tension, and support the body's natural healing process – a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for pain management. Cupping therapy may also be used alongside acupuncture to improve circulation and release muscle tension. Not every patient is suitable for acupuncture; our doctors will assess this with you first.
Physiotherapy for Wrist Pain

Physiotherapy for wrist pain may include:
- Ultrasound Therapy – stimulates healing in the structures of the wrist, promoting tissue repair and effective management of wrist pain and injuries
- Exercise Prescriptions – prescribed exercises and stretching programmes improve wrist strength, flexibility, and mobility, providing pain relief and supporting the healing process of wrist injuries
- Electrotherapy – modalities like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) alleviate wrist pain by altering pain signals and promoting the release of endorphins
- Posture Education – education on proper posture and ergonomic principles minimises strain on the wrists, including recommendations for activities and wrist movements to prevent pain and injuries
- Deep Tissue Massage – targets deeper muscle layers and connective tissue in the wrist, relieving chronic pain, reducing muscle tension, and improving blood flow to aid in wrist injury recovery
- Sports Physio for Wrist Pain – tailored programmes for wrist pain occurring during sports activities such as tennis, golf, weightlifting, and badminton, designed to relieve pain, target the unique stresses these sports place on the wrist, and reduce the risk of recurring injury

Wrist Pain Related
Carpal tunnel syndrome affects the median nerve passing through the wrist, causing pain and numbness throughout the hand. De Quervain's syndrome affects the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist, causing pain specifically at the base of the thumb. Both conditions respond well to physiotherapy, but the treatment approaches differ based on the underlying cause.
Recovery time depends on the underlying cause. Mild sprains or tendinitis may improve within 2-6 weeks with proper rest and physiotherapy. Carpal tunnel or TFCC injuries may take 3-4 months or longer. Regular assessment and follow-up help ensure you're progressing on track.
In many cases, yes, with modifications. Our physiotherapists can advise on ergonomic adjustments, proper wrist positioning, and which movements to avoid or modify while you recover. For mummy's wrist, we can suggest techniques to reduce strain during childcare tasks.
Not always. Many cases of wrist tendinitis, De Quervain's, or mild sprains can be assessed clinically without imaging. Our doctors will recommend an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI only if needed – for example, if symptoms are severe, persistent, or suggest a more serious underlying issue like a fracture or significant TFCC tear.
Acupuncture may help some patients manage wrist pain, muscle tension, and inflammation, particularly when used alongside physiotherapy and medical treatment. Suitability varies by individual, which is why our doctors assess each patient before recommending acupuncture.
Proper ergonomics, regular stretching breaks, avoiding repetitive strain, and maintaining good posture during desk work are key preventive measures. For new mothers, proper holding and lifting techniques can help prevent mummy's wrist. Our physiotherapists can provide specific recommendations tailored to your daily activities.
