Common causes of Hip pain and discomfort:

Hip Muscle Strain (Gluteal or Adductor Strain)
Overexertion of hip muscles, sudden acceleration during running, or rapid changes in activity level. Causes pain in the buttock, groin, or outer hip. Learn more about hamstring strain and hip injury treatment.
Hip Arthritis (Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis)
Wear and tear on the hip joint over time, or autoimmune inflammation. Causes pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, especially with walking, climbing stairs, or prolonged sitting.
Hip Labral Tear
Damage to the cartilage lining of the hip socket, often from repetitive movements or direct impact. Causes sharp pain, clicking or catching sensation, and reduced hip mobility.
Hip Bursitis
Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) around the hip joint, often from repetitive friction or direct pressure. Causes pain on the outer hip or deep in the hip joint, especially when lying on the affected side.
Iliopsoas Strain
Strain or tightness in the hip flexor muscle, common in athletes, runners, or from prolonged sitting. Causes pain in the front of the hip or groin and difficulty with hip flexion movements.
When Hip Pain Needs Urgent Care
Most hip pain can be safely assessed and managed by our GP team. However, please seek medical attention promptly – or visit an Emergency Department – if you experience:
- Severe hip pain after a fall or direct trauma to the hip
- Inability to bear weight on the affected leg or severe limping
- Sudden loss of hip mobility or locked hip joint
- Signs of infection such as redness, warmth, swelling, or fever in the hip area
- Hip pain radiating down the leg with severe numbness or weakness
In the above instances, it would be highly recommended by doctors to rule out serious hip conditions such as hip fracture, hip dislocation, labral tears with loose bodies, or joint infection through appropriate imaging and specialist assessment. Early identification and treatment of serious hip injuries is essential to prevent permanent loss of function and mobility.
Hip Pain Treatment and Pain Relief
Painkillers, injections, and surgery shouldn't be the only options for hip pain relief. At Regis Medical, our doctors, acupuncturists, and physiotherapists work together – under one roof, at both our Holland Village and Katong clinics – to find and treat the root cause of your hip pain.
GP Doctor Assessment
An evidence-based approach to diagnose, assess, and find the root cause of your hip pain or hip injury. By considering your medical history, lifestyle, and any contributing factors, so that we can tailor a personalised treatment plan to meet your unique needs.
Regular Progress Reviews and Post-Recovery Follow-Up
Regis Medical doctors will actively review your recovery progress in periodic fashion and help arrange for scans if necessary.
Acupuncture for Hip Pain
Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.
Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture may help relieve hip pain, ease muscle tension, and support the body's natural healing process – a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for pain management. Cupping therapy may also be used alongside acupuncture to improve circulation and release muscle tension in the hip and gluteal area. Not every patient is suitable for acupuncture; our doctors will assess this with you first.
Physiotherapy for Hip Pain
Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.
Physiotherapy for hip pain may include:
- Ultrasound Therapy – stimulates healing in hip structures, promoting tissue repair and effective management of hip pain and injuries
- Exercise Prescriptions – prescribed exercises and stretching programmes improve hip strength, flexibility, and mobility, providing pain relief and supporting the healing process of hip injuries
- Electrotherapy – modalities like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) alleviate hip pain by altering pain signals and promoting the release of endorphins
- Deep Tissue Massage – targets deeper muscle layers and connective tissue in the hip, gluteal, and thigh regions, relieving chronic pain, reducing muscle tension, and improving blood flow to aid in injury recovery
- Hip Mobility and Flexibility Training – guided exercises to improve hip range of motion, reduce stiffness, and address muscle imbalances that contribute to hip pain
- Sports Physio for Hip Pain – tailored programmes for hip pain occurring during sports activities such as running, football, tennis, and weightlifting, designed to relieve pain, target the unique stresses these sports place on the hip, and reduce the risk of recurring injury

Hip Pain Related
Hip arthritis is wear-and-tear (osteoarthritis) or autoimmune inflammation (rheumatoid) affecting the hip joint itself, causing deep pain with movement and stiffness. Hip bursitis is inflammation of fluid-filled sacs around the hip, causing outer hip pain, especially when lying on the affected side. Both are common but have different causes and treatment approaches.
Yes, several strategies help prevent running-related hip pain: progressive training increases (avoid sudden load increases), hip and glute strengthening exercises, proper running form, adequate warm-ups, and appropriate footwear. Our physiotherapists can assess your gait and provide a personalised prevention program.
Recovery time varies by cause. Hip muscle strain usually improves in 4-8 weeks with physiotherapy. Hip arthritis requires ongoing management but pain can be significantly reduced with exercise and treatment. Hip bursitis may take 6-12 weeks. Consistent adherence to your treatment plan accelerates recovery.
Acupuncture may help relieve hip pain, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility, particularly when used alongside physiotherapy and medical treatment. Effectiveness varies by individual and the underlying cause of pain. Our doctors assess suitability before recommending acupuncture.
Exercises that strengthen glutes, hip abductors, hip adductors, hip flexors, and core muscles are beneficial. Examples include glute bridges, clamshells, side-lying leg raises, squats, and lunges. Our physiotherapists will provide a personalised exercise programme tailored to your condition and activity level.
Yes, moderate to severe hip pain can impact walking, stair climbing, and other daily activities. However, with proper diagnosis and treatment including physiotherapy and acupuncture, most people can return to normal activities. Early assessment and treatment help maintain mobility and prevent chronic issues.
