Common causes of Hand pain and discomfort:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. Causes numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand and fingers, especially in the thumb, index, and middle fingers.

Trigger Finger (Stenosing Tenosynovitis)

Inflammation of the tendon sheath, causing the finger to "catch" or "lock." Causes pain, stiffness, and a popping or clicking sensation. Common causes include repetitive hand and finger movements (e.g. typing on keyboards), forceful or prolonged gripping (e.g. playing musical instruments), or finger injury.

De Quervain's Syndrome

Inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Causes pain and swelling at the base of the thumb. Learn more about De Quervain's syndrome treatment.

Arthritis (Rheumatoid or Osteoarthritis)

Both Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis can occur in the hand. Causes inflammation of the joints, resulting in hand and finger joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and decreased range of motion.

Hand Tendinitis

Inflammation of hand tendons, often due to overuse or repetitive motions. Causes pain, swelling, and stiffness in the hand.

When Hand or Finger Pain Needs Urgent Care

Most hand and finger pain can be safely assessed and managed by our GP team. However, please seek medical attention promptly – or visit an Emergency Department – if you experience:

  • Severe hand or finger pain after a cut, laceration, or injury with bleeding
  • Loss of sensation or complete numbness in the hand or fingers
  • Inability to move fingers or loss of finger function
  • Signs of infection such as redness, warmth, swelling, or pus from the hand or fingers
  • Severe swelling that restricts blood flow (fingers turning pale, blue, or feeling numb)

In the above instances, it would be highly recommended by doctors to rule out serious conditions such as nerve injury, tendon rupture, vascular compromise, or joint infection through appropriate assessment and imaging, and for the patient to be evaluated by an Emergency Physician or Hand Surgery Specialist before starting physiotherapy. Early identification and treatment of serious hand and finger injuries is essential to prevent permanent loss of function.

Acupuncture for Hand and Finger Pain

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.

Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture may help relieve hand and finger pain, ease muscle tension, and support the body's natural healing process – a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for pain management. Cupping therapy may also be used alongside acupuncture to improve circulation and release muscle tension around the hands and fingers. Not every patient is suitable for acupuncture; our doctors will assess this with you first.

Physiotherapy for Hand and Finger Pain

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.

Physiotherapy for hand and finger pain may include:

  • Ultrasound Therapy – stimulates healing in the structures of the hand and fingers, promoting tissue repair and effective management of hand or finger pain and injuries
  • Exercise Prescriptions – prescribed exercises and stretching programmes improve hand and finger strength, flexibility, and mobility, providing pain relief and supporting the healing process of hand or finger injuries
  • Electrotherapy – modalities like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) alleviate hand or finger pain by altering pain signals and promoting the release of endorphins
  • Posture Education – education on proper posture and ergonomic principles minimises strain on the hands and fingers, including recommendations for activities and hand movements to prevent pain and injuries
  • Deep Tissue Massage – targets deeper muscle layers and connective tissue in the hand and fingers, relieving chronic pain, reducing muscle tension, and improving blood flow to aid in injury recovery
  • Sports Physio for Hand and Finger Pain – tailored programmes for hand and finger pain occurring during sports activities such as tennis, rock climbing, golf, and weightlifting, designed to relieve pain, target the unique stresses these sports place on the hands, and reduce the risk of recurring injury

Hand and Finger Pain Related

What's the difference between carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of a nerve in the wrist, causing numbness and tingling in the hand and fingers. Trigger finger is inflammation of a tendon sheath in the finger, causing the finger to catch or lock with pain. Both are common hand conditions but have different underlying causes and treatment approaches.
Can carpal tunnel syndrome go away on its own?
Mild carpal tunnel syndrome may improve with rest, ergonomic changes, and physiotherapy. However, moderate to severe cases typically require ongoing treatment. Early intervention with physiotherapy and acupuncture can prevent progression and reduce the need for more invasive treatments.
How long does it take to recover from trigger finger treatment?
Most cases of trigger finger improve within 2-8 weeks with proper rest, physiotherapy, and acupuncture. More severe or chronic cases may take longer. Consistent adherence to your treatment plan is key to faster recovery.
Is acupuncture effective for hand and finger pain?
Acupuncture may help some patients manage hand and finger pain, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility, particularly when used alongside physiotherapy and medical treatment. Effectiveness varies by individual and the specific condition. Our doctors assess suitability before recommending acupuncture.
What ergonomic changes can help prevent hand and finger pain?
Proper keyboard and mouse positioning, taking regular breaks to stretch, maintaining good wrist posture, avoiding prolonged gripping, and using proper technique during repetitive tasks are key preventive measures. Our physiotherapists can assess your work setup and provide specific ergonomic recommendations.
