Common causes of knee pain and discomfort:

Runner's Knee (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome)

Runner's Knee results from knee overuse, improper tracking of the kneecap, muscle imbalances, or biomechanical issues. Causes dull, aching pain around or behind the kneecap, especially during activities like running or climbing stairs. Learn more about Runner's Knee treatment.

Meniscus Tears

Sudden twisting or rotating of the knee, often during sports or activities involving rapid changes in direction. Causes swelling, pain, stiffness, and sometimes a feeling of locking or catching in the knee. Can also result from degenerative changes.

Ligament Tear and Injury

Ligament injuries in the knee, most commonly Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears, are usually caused by a direct blow or force during sports. Results in swelling, pain, instability, and a popping sensation at the time of injury. Discover knee sprain and ligament injury treatment.

Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome

Overuse or repetitive friction of the IT band against the side of the knee, common in runners. Causes pain on the outer side of the knee, often worsening with activity.

Jumper's Knee (Patellar Tendinitis)

Jumper's Knee results from knee overuse, especially in activities involving jumping or quick changes in direction, often in sports. Causes pain and tenderness around the patellar tendon, below the kneecap.

Knee Osteoarthritis

Wear and tear on the knee joint over time, often seen in older adults. Causes joint pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.

When Knee Pain Needs Urgent Care

Most knee pain can be safely assessed and managed by our GP team. However, please seek medical attention promptly – or visit an Emergency Department – if you experience:

  • Severe knee pain after a fall, direct blow, or sports injury with inability to bear weight
  • Immediate swelling and severe joint deformity (knee looks abnormal)
  • Signs of infection such as redness, warmth, swelling, or fever
  • Severe swelling that restricts blood flow (leg below knee turning pale or blue, numbness in foot)
  • Sudden onset of severe pain with sudden loss of knee stability (giving way)

In the above instances, it would be highly recommended by doctors to rule out serious knee conditions such as fracture, severe ligament tear (ACL/MCL), meniscus tear with loose body, or joint infection through appropriate imaging and specialist assessment. Early identification and treatment of serious knee injuries is essential to prevent permanent damage and loss of function.

Knee Pain Treatment and Pain Relief

Painkillers, injections, and surgery shouldn't be the only options for knee pain relief. At Regis Medical, our doctors, acupuncturists, and physiotherapists work together – under one roof, at both our Holland Village and Katong clinics – to find and treat the root cause of your knee pain.

GP Doctor Assessment

An evidence-based approach to diagnose, assess, and find the root cause of your knee pain or knee injury. By considering your medical history, lifestyle, and any contributing factors, so that we can tailor a personalised treatment plan to meet your unique needs.

Regular Progress Reviews and Post-Recovery Follow-Up

Regis Medical doctors will actively review your recovery progress in periodic fashion and help arrange for scans if necessary.

Acupuncture for Knee Pain

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.

Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture may help relieve knee pain, ease muscle tension, and support the body's natural healing process – a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for pain management. Cupping therapy may also be used alongside acupuncture to improve circulation and release muscle tension around the knee. Not every patient is suitable for acupuncture; our doctors will assess this with you first.

Physiotherapy for Knee Pain

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.

Physiotherapy for knee pain may include:

  • Ultrasound Therapy – stimulates healing in the knee joint, promoting tissue repair and effective management of knee pain and injuries
  • Exercise Prescriptions – prescribed exercises and stretching programmes improve knee strength, flexibility, and mobility, providing pain relief and supporting the healing process of knee injuries
  • Electrotherapy – modalities like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) alleviate knee pain by altering pain signals and promoting the release of endorphins
  • Deep Tissue Massage – targets deeper muscle layers and connective tissue around the knee, relieving chronic pain, reducing muscle tension, and improving blood flow to aid in injury recovery
  • Posture and Movement Education – education on proper posture, gait, and movement patterns minimises strain on the knees, including recommendations for sitting, standing, and activities to prevent knee pain and injuries
  • Sports Physio for Knee Pain – tailored programmes for knee pain occurring during sports activities such as running, basketball, soccer, and tennis, designed to relieve pain, target the unique stresses these sports place on the knee, and reduce the risk of recurring injury

Yes, several strategies help prevent running-related knee pain: proper running shoes, gradual increases in mileage, strengthening exercises for hips and thighs, stretching, and good running form. Our physiotherapists can assess your gait and provide a personalised prevention programme.
How long does knee pain recovery typically take?
Recovery time varies by cause and severity. Runner's Knee typically improves in 4-8 weeks with physiotherapy. Meniscus tears may take 6-12 weeks. Ligament injuries may take 3-6 months or longer. Consistent treatment and adherence to your physiotherapy programme accelerate recovery.

Acupuncture may help relieve knee pain, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility, particularly when used alongside physiotherapy and medical treatment. Effectiveness varies by individual and the underlying cause of pain. Our doctors assess suitability before recommending acupuncture.
What exercises help strengthen knees and prevent injury?
Exercises that strengthen the quadriceps, hamstrings, hip muscles, and calf muscles are beneficial. Examples include squats, lunges, leg presses, calf raises, and hip strengthening exercises. Our physiotherapists will provide a personalised exercise programme tailored to your condition and activity level.
When should I see a doctor for knee pain?
Seek medical attention for severe pain, sudden swelling, inability to bear weight, feeling of instability, or pain that doesn't improve with rest and home care after a few days. Early assessment helps identify the cause and prevent chronic issues.
