Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)
Pain and inflammation on the inner side of the elbow, caused by repetitive gripping and wrist flexion activities. Discover golfer's elbow treatment options tailored to help you get back in the game.
Elbow Tendinitis
Inflammation of the elbow tendons. Overuse or repetitive motions can lead to tendinitis, causing pain and swelling.
Elbow Sprains or Ligament Tear
Injuries to the ligaments in the elbow, such as a sprain or tear, can cause pain and instability. These injuries can result from trauma or overuse.
Arthritis
Both Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis can occur in the elbow joint, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.
When Elbow Pain Needs Urgent Care
Most elbow pain can be safely assessed and managed by our GP team. However, please seek medical attention promptly – or visit an Emergency Department – if you experience:
- Sudden, severe elbow pain after a fall, direct blow, or trauma
- Visible deformity of the elbow or inability to move the arm
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the forearm or hand
- Signs of infection such as redness, warmth, swelling, or fever
- Pain that is rapidly worsening despite rest and over-the-counter pain relief
In the above instances, it would be highly recommended by doctors to rule out more serious elbow injuries through appropriate imaging, such as an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI, and for the patient to be assessed by an Emergency Physician or Orthopaedic Surgery Specialist before starting physiotherapy. Early identification of structural, traumatic, or infective causes of elbow pain is essential to ensure safe and effective treatment.

Elbow Pain Treatment and Pain Relief
Painkillers, injections, and surgery shouldn't be the only options for elbow pain relief. At Regis Medical, our doctors, acupuncturists, and physiotherapists work together – under one roof, at both our Holland Village and Katong clinics – to find and treat the root cause of your elbow pain.
GP Doctor Assessment
An evidence-based approach to diagnose, assess, and find the root cause of your elbow pain or elbow injury. By considering your medical history, lifestyle, and any contributing factors, so that we can tailor a personalised treatment plan to meet your unique needs.
Regular Progress Reviews and Post-Recovery Follow-Up
Regis Medical doctors will actively review your recovery progress in periodic fashion and help arrange for scans if necessary.
Acupuncture for Elbow Pain
Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.
Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture may help relieve elbow pain, ease muscle tension, and support the body's natural healing process – a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for pain management. Cupping therapy may also be used alongside acupuncture to improve circulation and release muscle tension. Not every patient is suitable for acupuncture; our doctors will assess this with you first.
Physiotherapy for Elbow Pain
Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.
Physiotherapy for elbow pain may include:
- Ultrasound Therapy – stimulates healing in the structures of the elbow, promoting tissue repair and effective management of elbow pain and injuries
- Exercise Prescriptions – prescribed exercises and stretching programmes improve elbow strength, flexibility, and mobility, providing pain relief and supporting the healing process of elbow injuries
- Electrotherapy – modalities like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) alleviate elbow pain by altering pain signals and promoting the release of endorphins
- Posture Education – education on proper posture and ergonomic principles minimises strain on the elbows, including recommendations for activities and movements to prevent pain and injuries
- Deep Tissue Massage – targets deeper muscle layers and connective tissue in the elbow, relieving chronic pain, reducing muscle tension, and improving blood flow to aid in elbow injury recovery
- Sports Physio for Elbow Pain – tailored programmes for elbow pain occurring during sports activities such as tennis, golf, weightlifting, and badminton, designed to relieve pain, target the unique stresses these sports place on the elbow, and reduce the risk of recurring injury

Elbow Pain Related
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) affects the outer side of the elbow, while golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis) affects the inner side. The key difference is the type of repetitive motion causing pain – wrist extension for tennis elbow, wrist flexion for golfer's elbow. Both respond well to physiotherapy and acupuncture.
Most cases of tennis or golfer's elbow improve within 4-12 weeks with proper rest, physiotherapy, and acupuncture. More severe cases or those with longer duration may take several months. Regular assessment and follow-up help ensure you're progressing on track.
In many cases, yes, with proper guidance. Complete rest isn't always necessary or beneficial. Our physiotherapists can advise on which movements are safe, which to avoid, and how to modify your sport while you recover.
Not always. Many cases of tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, or muscle strain can be assessed clinically without imaging. Our doctors will recommend an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI only if needed – for example, if symptoms are severe, persistent, or suggest a more serious underlying issue.
Acupuncture may help some patients manage elbow pain, muscle tension, and inflammation, particularly when used alongside physiotherapy and medical treatment. Suitability varies by individual, which is why our doctors assess each patient before recommending acupuncture.
Yes. Prolonged poor posture, especially from desk work or phone use, can contribute to muscle tightness and shoulder tendinitis over time. Our physiotherapists can guide you on posture correction as part of your treatment plan.
