Common causes of lower back pain and discomfort:

Lower Back Muscle Strain or Sprain

Overexertion of lower back muscles, lifting heavy objects, or sudden awkward movements. Causes localised pain, stiffness, and sometimes muscle spasms. Learn more about lower back strain treatment.

Herniated Disc (Bulging or Ruptured Disc)

The soft inner portion of a spinal disc pushes through the outer layer, due to trauma, repetitive strains, lifting heavy objects, or poor posture. Causes extreme pain, including pain radiating down the leg (sciatica), numbness, tingling, or weakness.

Sciatica

Pain that originates in the lower back and travels down the sciatic nerve. Usually associated with compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, commonly caused by lumbar disc pathology or muscle tension.

Degenerative Disc Disease

Wear and tear on lower spinal discs over time. Causes chronic lower back pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility. Often due to ageing and repetitive use.

Muscle Spasms

Involuntary muscle contractions in the lower back, often due to strain or injury. Cause sudden and intense pain and muscle tightness.

When Lower Back Pain Needs Urgent Care

Most lower back pain can be safely assessed and managed by our GP team. However, please seek medical attention promptly – or visit an Emergency Department – if you experience:

  • Sudden severe lower back pain after a fall, motor vehicle accident, or significant trauma
  • Lower back pain accompanied by loss of bowel or bladder control (cauda equina syndrome warning sign)
  • Severe lower back pain with fever, which may indicate infection of the spine or disc
  • Progressive neurological symptoms such as increasing weakness, numbness in the legs or groin, or loss of sensation
  • Lower back pain with unexplained weight loss or night pain that does not improve with rest

In the above instances, it would be highly recommended by doctors to rule out serious spinal conditions such as cauda equina syndrome, spinal infection, fracture, or malignancy through appropriate imaging and specialist assessment. Early identification and treatment of serious lower back conditions is essential to prevent permanent neurological damage.

Acupuncture for Lower Back Pain

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.

Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture may help relieve lower back pain, ease muscle tension, and support the body's natural healing process – a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for pain management. Cupping therapy may also be used alongside acupuncture to improve circulation and release muscle tension in the lower back. Not every patient is suitable for acupuncture; our doctors will assess this with you first.

Physiotherapy for Lower Back Pain

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.

Physiotherapy for lower back pain may include:

  • Ultrasound Therapy – stimulates healing in lower back structures, promoting tissue repair and effective management of lower back pain and injuries
  • Exercise Prescriptions – prescribed exercises and stretching programmes enhance core strength, flexibility, and mobility, providing pain relief and supporting the healing process of lower back injuries
  • Electrotherapy – modalities like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) alleviate lower back pain by altering pain signals and promoting the release of endorphins
  • Deep Tissue Massage – targets deeper muscle layers and connective tissue in the lower back, relieving chronic pain, reducing muscle tension, and improving blood flow to aid in injury recovery
  • Posture and Body Mechanics Education – education on proper posture, lifting techniques, and body mechanics minimises strain on the lower spine, including recommendations for sitting, standing, and lifting to prevent lower back pain and injuries
  • Sports Physio for Lower Back Pain – tailored programmes for lower back pain occurring during sports activities such as running, weightlifting, swimming, and golf, designed to relieve pain, target the unique stresses these sports place on the lower back, and reduce the risk of recurring injury

Lower Back Pain Related

What's the difference between lower back strain and a herniated disc?
Lower back strain is a stretch or tear in muscles or ligaments, usually causing localised pain that improves with rest and physiotherapy. A herniated disc occurs when the inner disc material pushes through the outer layer, often causing radiating pain down the leg (sciatica), numbness, or tingling. Herniated discs typically require more comprehensive management.
Can lower back pain go away on its own?
Mild lower back strain often improves within a few weeks with rest and proper care. However, moderate to severe lower back pain or conditions like herniated discs typically benefit from physiotherapy, acupuncture, and medical guidance to prevent chronic pain and recurrence.
How can I prevent lower back pain?
Maintaining good posture, strengthening your core with regular exercise, using proper lifting techniques, avoiding prolonged sitting, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing stress all help prevent lower back pain. Our physiotherapists can provide a personalised prevention programme.
Is acupuncture effective for lower back pain?
Acupuncture may help relieve lower back pain, reduce muscle tension, and improve mobility, particularly when used alongside physiotherapy and medical treatment. Effectiveness varies by individual and the underlying cause of pain. Our doctors assess suitability before recommending acupuncture.
How long does lower back pain recovery typically take?
Recovery time varies depending on the cause and severity of lower back pain. Mild strains may improve in 2-4 weeks, while herniated discs or degenerative conditions may take 6-12 weeks or longer. Consistent adherence to your treatment plan significantly accelerates recovery.
