We understand how arthritis pain can impact your daily life. At Regis Medical, our team of expert healthcare professionals is dedicated to providing comprehensive and personalised solutions to help you find relief and regain control of your well-being.

Common causes of arthritis pain and discomfort:

Osteoarthritis

The wear and tear on the joints over time, leading to the breakdown of cartilage. Common amongst older adults, especially women after menopause. Causes joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and decreased range of motion, often affecting weight-bearing joints like the knees, hips, and spine.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

An autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the synovium (lining of the membranes surrounding the joints). Causes joint pain, swelling, warmth, and morning stiffness, typically affecting multiple joints on both sides of the body.

Psoriatic Arthritis

An autoimmune condition associated with psoriasis, affecting joints and skin. Typically develops in people with psoriasis. Causes joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, often accompanied by skin changes and nail abnormalities.

Gouty Arthritis (Gout)

The buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. Causes sudden and severe pain, swelling, redness, and warmth, often in the big toe, ankle, or knee. Often called a gout attack.

When Arthritis Pain Needs Urgent Care

Most arthritis pain can be safely managed by our GP team. However, please seek medical attention promptly – or visit an Emergency Department – if you experience:

  • Sudden, severe joint pain with fever or systemic illness symptoms (which may indicate infection in the joint)
  • Severe swelling that restricts movement or blood flow (limb turning pale or blue)
  • Signs of infection such as redness, warmth, or drainage from the joint
  • Joint pain accompanied by unexplained weight loss or constitutional symptoms
  • Sudden onset of severe symptoms in previously stable arthritis

In the above instances, it would be highly recommended by doctors to rule out serious conditions such as septic arthritis, acute flare-ups requiring urgent management, or systemic disease complications through appropriate testing and assessment by an Emergency Physician or Rheumatology Specialist. Early identification and treatment of acute arthritis complications is essential to prevent permanent joint damage.

Arthritis Pain Treatment and Management

Non-surgical, evidence-based arthritis management is possible. At Regis Medical, our doctors, acupuncturists, and physiotherapists work together – under one roof, at both our Holland Village and Katong clinics – to reduce arthritis pain, improve mobility, and enhance your quality of life.

GP Doctor Assessment and Diagnosis

An evidence-based approach to diagnose the type of arthritis, assess disease activity, and develop a personalised management plan. By considering your medical history, lifestyle, and any contributing factors, we tailor treatment to your unique needs. Doctors will actively review your progress and arrange for blood tests or imaging if necessary.

Regular Progress Reviews and Post-Treatment Follow-Up

Regis Medical doctors will actively monitor your arthritis progression and pain levels in periodic fashion, adjusting your treatment plan as needed to optimise outcomes.

Acupuncture for Arthritis Pain

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.

Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture may help manage arthritis pain, reduce inflammation, and improve joint mobility. Our skilled and experienced acupuncturists use precise techniques to restore balance and promote healing, providing a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for pain management. Cupping therapy may also be used to improve blood circulation and release muscle tension around affected joints. Not every patient is suitable for acupuncture; our doctors will assess this with you first.

Physiotherapy for Arthritis

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.

Physiotherapy for arthritis may include:

  • Ultrasound Therapy – stimulates healing and reduces inflammation in affected joints, promoting tissue repair and pain relief
  • Exercise Prescriptions – carefully designed, low-impact exercises and stretching programmes improve strength, flexibility, and joint mobility without exacerbating pain
  • Electrotherapy – modalities like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) alleviate arthritis pain by altering pain signals and promoting endorphin release
  • Hot and Cold Therapy – therapeutic application of heat and cold to reduce inflammation, ease muscle tension, and provide pain relief
  • Deep Tissue Massage – targets muscles and connective tissue around affected joints, relieving pain and tension while improving blood circulation
  • Posture and Mobility Education – guidance on proper positioning, movement patterns, and ergonomics to minimise stress on arthritic joints during daily activities

Arthritis Pain Related

What's the difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis?
Osteoarthritis is degenerative wear and tear of joint cartilage, typically developing slowly with age. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks joint linings, usually developing rapidly and affecting multiple joints on both sides of the body. Both cause pain and stiffness, but have different underlying causes and may require different management approaches.
Can arthritis be cured?
Unfortunately, arthritis cannot be cured, but symptoms can be effectively managed with the right treatment plan. Early intervention with physiotherapy, acupuncture, and medical management can slow progression, reduce pain, and help maintain joint mobility and function.
Is exercise good for arthritis?
Yes, regular, gentle exercise is beneficial for arthritis. It helps maintain joint flexibility, strengthens supporting muscles, and reduces pain. However, exercise should be tailored to your arthritis type and severity. Our physiotherapists design safe, low-impact programmes to keep you active without aggravating your joints.
What lifestyle changes can help with arthritis?
Weight management, staying active with appropriate exercise, maintaining good posture, using proper ergonomics, managing stress, and avoiding repetitive strain are all helpful. Anti-inflammatory nutrition and adequate sleep also support joint health. Our team can provide personalised recommendations.
Is acupuncture effective for arthritis?
Acupuncture may help manage arthritis pain, reduce inflammation, and improve joint mobility, particularly when used alongside physiotherapy and medical treatment. Effectiveness varies by individual and arthritis type. Our doctors assess suitability before recommending acupuncture.
How often should I see a doctor for arthritis management?
Regular monitoring helps track disease progression and treatment effectiveness. Our doctors will establish a personalised review schedule based on your arthritis type, severity, and response to treatment. Most patients benefit from periodic check-ins to adjust management as needed.
