Kidney Function Test Singapore

Check Your Kidney Health with a Simple Blood Test
A kidney function test (also known as a renal panel) helps assess how well your kidneys are filtering waste, balancing fluids, and maintaining essential minerals in your body.
At Regis Medical, we provide comprehensive kidney testing in Singapore, including blood and urine tests, with doctor interpretation and follow-up care.
What Is a Kidney Function Test?
A kidney test evaluates how effectively your kidneys are working by measuring waste products and electrolyte balance in your blood and urine.
It typically includes:
- Creatinine – waste product filtered by the kidneys
- Urea – reflects nitrogen waste in the blood
- eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) – indicates kidney filtration efficiency
- Electrolytes – sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate
In some cases, urine tests may also be performed to detect early kidney damage.
What’s Included in a Kidney Function Test?
Blood Test Components:
- Creatinine – Measures waste product filtered by the kidneys
- Urea – Reflects nitrogen waste in the blood
- eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) – Indicates how well your kidneys are filtering
- Electrolytes – Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Bicarbonate (for fluid balance and nerve function)
Optional Add-ons:
- Urine Test (Urinalysis) – Detects protein, blood, or other abnormalities
- Microalbumin Test – Sensitive test for early kidney damage in diabetics
- Calcium and Phosphate – Related to kidney-related bone health

Why Is Kidney Testing Important?
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is common in Singapore, especially among adults with diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol. In early stages, kidney damage causes no symptoms, but once lost, kidney function cannot be fully restored.
You should consider testing if you:
- Have diabetes or high blood pressure (part of regular monitoring)
- Have a family history of kidney disease
- Experience fatigue, leg swelling, frothy urine or frequent urination
- Are on medications that may affect kidneys (e.g. painkillers, antibiotics, supplements)
- Have had abnormal urine tests or blood pressure readings
Early detection allows for lifestyle changes and treatment before kidney damage progresses.
Symptoms That May Indicate Kidney Problems
- Swelling in ankles, feet, or face
- Fatigue or shortness of breath
- Foamy or bloody urine
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- High blood pressure
- Nausea, poor appetite
- Difficulty concentrating or mental fog
Don’t wait for symptoms, early testing allows for earlier lifestyle or treatment interventions.

After Your Tests
Once your kidney function test is completed, here is what you can expect:
How You’ll Receive Results
- Turnaround time: Results are usually ready within 2–5 working days, depending on the specific markers tested (e.g., creatinine, urea, eGFR, electrolytes).
- Secure delivery: Your results will be sent via WhatsApp or email once available. If follow-up is required, our clinic will contact you to arrange a review session.
What the Results Mean
- Normal results: If your kidney function is within the healthy range, no further action may be required. Our doctor may still suggest routine monitoring if you have risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or long-term medication use.
- Abnormal results: If your results suggest reduced kidney function, dehydration, or electrolyte imbalance, we will arrange a review session. Our doctor will explain your results clearly and advise on lifestyle changes, treatment, or additional tests.
Confidentiality
Your kidney test results are treated with the highest level of confidentiality.
Next Steps & Ongoing Care
- Lifestyle advice: Guidance may include hydration, blood pressure control, dietary adjustments (such as reducing salt or protein), and avoiding medications that may strain the kidneys.
- Repeat testing: Sometimes kidney function tests are repeated over time to confirm results or monitor trends.
- Additional investigations: Depending on your results, further tests such as urine analysis, ultrasound imaging, or more detailed blood work may be recommended.
- Specialist referral: If chronic kidney disease or more advanced problems are suspected, our doctor will refer you to a trusted nephrologist for specialist care.
- Preventive care: Regular kidney function checks may be advised if you have conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease.

A renal panel is a group of blood tests that assess how well your kidneys are working. It typically measures:
- Creatinine & eGFR: main markers of kidney filtering function
- Blood urea nitrogen (BUN): another waste product level
- Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate): to see how well your kidneys balance salts and acids
eGFR stands for estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate. It’s calculated from your creatinine, age, sex, and sometimes race, and gives an estimate of how well your kidneys filter waste.
- Above 90: normal
- 60–89: mild reduction (often age-related)
- Below 60: may indicate chronic kidney disease (CKD), needing further assessment
It’s a painless scan using sound waves to create images of your kidneys and bladder. It helps detect:
- Kidney size & shape changes (like cysts or scarring)
- Kidney stones
- Blockages or swelling (hydronephrosis)
- Some tumors
