What is a Pneumococcal Vaccine
The Pneumococcal vaccine is a vaccine designed to protect against infections caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as pneumococcus.
This bacterium is responsible for a wide range of illnesses, including Pneumonia, Meningitis, Bacteraemia, and Sinusitis.
The Pneumococcal vaccine helps the immune system develop protection against these specific strains of pneumococcal bacteria, reducing the risk of developing severe infections.
At Regis Medical, we offer two pneumococcal vaccines for adults:
- Prevenar 20 (PCV20): A single-dose vaccine that protects against 20 strains of pneumococcal bacteria.
- Prevenar 13 (PCV13): Protects against 13 strains. Typically given as part of a two-dose series.
Who should take Pneumococcal Vaccine
The Pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for those who are at higher risk of developing severe pneumococcal infections. We recommend the following groups to get the Pneumococcal vaccine:
- Adults aged 65 and older
- Adults above the age of 18 with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease
- Adults above the age of 18 that are immunocompromised, such as HIV or cancer.
- Smokers
- Health care workers

Transcript
Pneumococcal infection is more common than people realise. It can lead to serious health complications if not addressed in a timely manner and is also a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.
Hi, I’m Dr. Clarice Chong from Regis Medical.
What is Pneumococcal Infection?
Pneumococcal infection is caused by a bacterium called Streptococcus pneumoniae. These infections can range from mild respiratory illnesses to severe diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infection. It's important to be aware of the risks associated with these infections and the ways to prevent them.
Symptoms
Symptoms can vary based on the system affected. For example, pneumonia often presents with fever, cough, and breathing difficulties. In severe cases such as meningitis—which affects the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord—symptoms include severe headaches, vomiting, nausea, and photophobia. These conditions can be life threatening, particularly among vulnerable populations such as the elderly.
Transmission
Pneumococcal bacteria can be transmitted via respiratory secretions, for example when one coughs or sneezes. Individuals with weakened immune systems such as the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions are at higher risk of developing severe pneumococcal infections.
Prevention
Vaccines are the best way to prevent pneumococcal infection. Vaccinated individuals have a lower risk of getting infected and suffering complications. Adults over the age of 65 are recommended to take the pneumococcal vaccine, especially those who smoke or have conditions such as diabetes or chronic lung disease.
Pneumococcal infections can have far-reaching consequences for both individuals and the community. By getting vaccinated and encouraging those around you to do the same, you are not only safeguarding your health but also contributing to the collective effort to prevent the spread of infection.
At Regis Medical, your well-being is our priority. We offer the latest single-dose pneumococcal vaccine called PCV 20 to help protect you and your loved ones. By taking this proactive step, you are ensuring a safer, healthier future.
Protect yourself and your loved ones with the pneumococcal vaccine at Regis Medical. We wish you and your family good health.
