Rapid Influenza test to provide a peace of mind for you

What is a rapid Influenza Test

A rapid influenza test is a diagnostic test used to quickly detect the presence of influenza virus antigens in your body, aiding in prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment decisions for you.

Why do I need an Influenza Test

A rapid influenza test is crucial for patients experiencing flu-like symptoms, as these symptoms can often be easily confused with those of other respiratory illnesses, enabling accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment to minimize complications and ensure effective management.

Common flu symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Vomiting and diarrhea (More common in children)

While most can recover from fever and other flu symptoms within a week without requiring medical attention. However, influenza can cause severe illness or death among high risk groups including the infant, young children, the elderly, pregnant women, health workers and those with serious medical conditions.

After Your Rapid Flu Test

Once your rapid flu test is completed, here is what you can expect:

How You’ll Receive Results

  • Turnaround time: Results are typically available within 15 minutes.

What the Results Mean

  • Negative result: If the test is negative, our doctor may still review your symptoms. Other viral or bacterial infections can present with flu-like signs, and further testing may sometimes be needed.
  • Positive result: If the test confirms influenza, our doctor will discuss treatment options with you. For higher-risk groups (e.g., elderly, pregnant women, or patients with chronic conditions), antiviral medication may be recommended. In selected cases, antiviral prophylaxis may be given to patients with close contacts.

Next Steps & Ongoing Care

  • Treatment and recovery advice: Our doctor will guide you on symptom relief, hydration, and rest. If antiviral medication is suitable, it will be prescribed.
  • Monitoring: You’ll be advised on red flag symptoms (such as shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent high fever, or worsening cough) that require urgent medical attention.
  • Specialist referral: In rare cases where complications arise (such as pneumonia or severe respiratory distress), our doctor will refer you promptly to a trusted specialist or hospital for further care.
  • Prevention: We may also discuss preventive measures, including annual flu vaccination, which helps protect you and those around you.

General

What is a Rapid Influenza Test?

It is a quick diagnostic test that detects influenza virus antigens from a nasal or throat swab. The test provides results within 15 minutes, helping Our Doctor decide on the most appropriate treatment quickly.

When should I get tested for influenza?

You should consider testing if you have flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, sore throat, cough, runny nose, body aches, headaches, or fatigue. Testing is especially important for children, seniors, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and those with chronic medical conditions who may develop more severe illness.

How is the test performed?

Our Doctors gently collects a swab sample from your nose or throat. The process takes only a few seconds and may feel slightly uncomfortable but is not painful.

How accurate is the test?

Rapid influenza tests are highly specific but slightly less sensitive than laboratory PCR tests. A positive result usually confirms influenza, while a negative result may sometimes need follow-up testing if symptoms are strongly suggestive. Our Doctor will interpret your result in the context of your symptoms.

Do I need to fast or prepare for the test?

No fasting or special preparation is needed. Simply arrive at the clinic for your appointment or walk-in consultation.

How long do results take and what is the cost?

Results are ready in about 15 minutes. The Rapid Influenza Test costs $25 (prices in SGD, exclusive of GST). A consultation fee applies.

What happens if the test is positive?

Our Doctor will discuss treatment options, which may include antiviral medications (if within the effective treatment window), symptom relief, and rest. Advice on preventing spread to family and colleagues will also be given.

What if the test is negative?

Our Doctor will consider other possible infections, such as the common cold, COVID-19, or bacterial causes, and advise further testing or treatment if required.

Is influenza contagious?

Yes. Influenza spreads through respiratory droplets. Staying home, wearing a mask, practicing hand hygiene, and avoiding close contact while unwell can help reduce transmission.

Can children and pregnant women take the test?

Yes. The test is suitable for both children and adults, including pregnant women. Our Doctor will advise on safe treatment options based on the results.
