Rapid Strep A test to provide a peace of mind for parentsWhat is a Strep A Swab Test
A Strep Test, also known as a rapid strep antigen test, is a diagnostic test used to determine whether a person has streptococcal bacteria in their throat, specifically Group A Beta-Hemolytic Strep. Streptococcal infections can cause pharyngeal and respiratory illnesses such as strep throat, scarlet fever, tonsilar abscesses, and pneumonia. This can lead to discomfort and complications if left untreated.
During the test, a throat swab will be gently inserted into the back of your throat to collect a sample of cells. This process is quick and typically causes minimal discomfort.
When do you need a Strep Test
If your child is experiencing symptoms such as:
- Sore throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Fever
- Swollen lymph nodes
- White or yellow spots, or a coating on the throat and tonsils
It is essential to seek medical attention promptly, as these symptoms could indicate a streptococcal infection that may require targeted antibiotic treatment and symptom relief.

After Your Strep A Swab Test
Once your Strep A swab test is completed, here is what you can expect:
How You’ll Receive Results
- Turnaround time: Rapid results are usually available within 15 minutes.
What the Results Mean
- Negative result: If the test is negative, you are unlikely to be having a Strep A bacterial infection. Depending on your clinical scenario, our doctor may still prescribe antibiotics but will exercise judgment and discuss options with you. Supportive care may be chosen if the overall clinical picture suggests a viral infection.
- Positive result: If the test is positive, it indicates a Strep A bacterial infection. Our doctor will discuss treatment options, typically a course of antibiotics to clear the infection and prevent complications.
Next Steps & Ongoing Care
- Treatment: If antibiotics are prescribed, our doctor will guide you on the correct usage and duration to ensure effective recovery.
- Symptom management: Advice on hydration, rest, and soothing remedies will also be provided to relieve discomfort.
- Monitoring: You’ll be advised on warning signs such as worsening sore throat, difficulty breathing, or rash, which require prompt review.
- Specialist referral: In rare cases of recurrent strep infections or complications (such as abscesses or rheumatic fever), our doctor will refer you to a specialist for further management.
- Prevention: Practising good hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with others while unwell helps prevent spreading the infection.

General
It is a quick clinic test that detects Group A Streptococcus (GAS) from a throat swab. GAS can cause strep throat, scarlet fever, and tonsillar infections. Our Rapid Strep A test provides a preliminary result in about 15 minutes, allowing prompt treatment when indicated.
Testing is useful when there are symptoms suggestive of strep throat, especially in children:
- Sore throat with painful swallowing
- Fever
- Swollen/tender neck (lymph nodes)
- Red tonsils with white/yellow patches or coating
- Absence of cough (more typical of bacterial than viral sore throat)
Our Doctor will assess symptoms and advise whether testing is appropriate.
Our Doctors gently swabs the back of the throat and tonsils. The swab takes a few seconds and may feel uncomfortable but should not be painful. The sample is run on a rapid antigen cassette on-site.
Turnaround is typically ~15 minutes. The Rapid Strep A Throat Swab is $25 (prices in SGD, exclusive of GST). A mandatory consultation fee applies.
Rapid antigen tests are specific for Group A Strep and are good at confirming infection when positive. A negative result does not fully exclude strep, especially early in illness. If clinical suspicion remains high despite a negative rapid test, Our Doctor may recommend a follow-up throat culture or PCR.
Yes. Starting antibiotics before the swab can lower the bacterial load and increase the chance of a false negative. Tell Our Doctor if antibiotics have already been taken.
Our Doctor will discuss treatment, including appropriate antibiotics, pain/fever relief, hydration, and return to school/work advice. Most patients improve within 24–48 hours of starting antibiotics.
Our Doctor will consider other causes (viral sore throat is common) and manage symptoms. If red flags are present or symptoms persist/worsen, a throat culture/PCR or further review may be advised.
In general, after at least 24 hours of appropriate antibiotics and when fever has resolved and the child feels well enough to participate. Our Doctor will provide a medical note if needed.
Yes. It spreads via respiratory droplets. Reduce spread by staying home while unwell, avoiding sharing utensils, practicing hand hygiene, covering coughs/sneezes, and disposing of tissues promptly.
Untreated Group A Strep can lead to tonsillar abscess, acute rheumatic fever, post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, and ear or sinus infections. Appropriate testing and timely treatment help prevent complications.
No. The rapid test detects antigens specific to Group A Streptococcus. However, it is possible to carry Group A Strep and have a concurrent viral illness; clinical correlation by Our Doctor is important.
Yes. While strep throat is more common in school-aged children, adults can also be tested based on symptoms and exposure.
Usually no. A positive rapid antigen result is generally sufficient to start treatment. A culture or PCR may be considered for special circumstances (e.g., outbreaks, recurrent infections, treatment failure).
