Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) is a method of tracking glucose levels throughout the day and night. Unlike traditional finger-prick testing, CGM uses a small wearable sensor that continuously measures glucose levels and sends real-time readings to a smartphone or receiver.

At Regis Medical GP Clinic, we offer modern CGM solutions (some examples include those from Dexcom and Abbott) , helping patients gain deeper insights into their glucose patterns and manage diabetes more effectively.

CGM is commonly used by individuals managing Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and those who require closer monitoring of glucose fluctuations.

What Is Continuous Glucose Monitoring?

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) measures glucose levels in the interstitial fluid just under the skin using a tiny wearable sensor.

Unlike single blood glucose readings from finger-prick tests, CGM provides continuous data every few minutes, allowing patients to see trends, patterns, and fluctuations in glucose levels throughout the day.

This helps patients understand how different factors affect blood sugar levels, including:

  • Meals and carbohydrate intake
  • Exercise and physical activity
  • Diabetes medications or insulin
  • Stress levels
  • Sleep patterns

With this information, patients and doctors can make more informed decisions about treatment, diet, and lifestyle adjustments.

How Continuous Glucose Monitoring Works

Sensor Insertion - A small sensor is inserted just under the skin, typically on the upper arm or abdomen.

Continuous Glucose Measurement The sensor measures glucose levels in the interstitial fluid at regular intervals.

Data TransmissionGlucose readings are sent wirelessly to a smartphone app or receiver device.

Real-Time TrackingCGM devices display current glucose levels, trends, and rate of change.

Alerts and NotificationsSome CGM systems can notify users when glucose levels are too high or too low, helping prevent complications.

Sensor ReplacementSensors are disposable and replaced regularly to maintain accuracy.

  • Dexcom G7: approximately every 10 days

Who Is Continuous Glucose Monitoring Suitable For?

Continuous glucose monitoring may benefit:

  • Individuals with Type 1 diabetes
  • Individuals with Type 2 diabetes, especially those on insulin
  • Individuals that have impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glycaemia (Pre-Diabetes)
  • Patients with frequent glucose fluctuations
  • Individuals with hypoglycaemia unawareness
  • Children or adolescents requiring close glucose monitoring
  • Patients seeking better understanding of their glucose response to food or exercise
  • A medical consultation is recommended to determine if CGM is suitable for your condition.

Benefits of Continuous Glucose Monitoring

  • Reduced Finger-Prick TestingCGM significantly reduces the need for frequent finger-prick blood glucose checks.
  • Early Detection of High or Low GlucoseAlerts allow users to respond quickly to hyperglycaemia or hypoglycaemia.
  • Better Glucose ControlContinuous data allows patients to make timely adjustments to diet, exercise, or medication.
  • Clear Glucose TrendsCGM shows direction and speed of glucose changes, not just single readings.
  • Improved Lifestyle AwarenessPatients can better understand how, meals affect glucose levels, physical activity influences blood sugar, sleep and stress impact glucose control

Types of Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems

Real-Time CGM (rtCGM)

Examples: Dexcom G7

Features:

  • Automatic continuous glucose updates
  • Customisable alerts and alarms
  • Data sharing with caregivers or healthcare providers

Typical wear duration: Sensors replaced approximately every 10 days

Limitations of Continuous Glucose Monitoring

While CGM provides valuable glucose insights, some limitations include:

  • Lag TimeGlucose readings from interstitial fluid may lag slightly behind blood glucose during rapid changes.
  • Device CostsSensors need to be replaced regularly.
  • Device Issues - Inherent  risk of sensors being dislodged due to unpredictable circumstances
  • Skin IrritationSome users may experience mild redness or itching at the sensor site.

Despite these limitations, CGM remains a powerful tool for improving diabetes management and reducing complications.

Take Control of Your Glucose Levels

Continuous glucose monitoring can help you detect hidden glucose spikes, overnight fluctuations, and trends that traditional testing may miss.

Our clinic offers Dexcom G7 and FreeStyle Libre CGM systems, along with medical guidance to help you interpret your results.

Disclaimer

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensors typically have a lifespan of approximately 10–14 days, depending on the specific device used and individual usage conditions.

During the process of CGM sensor insertion in the clinic, when our doctor assists with attaching the device, or when patients are taught how to apply or use the device, minor bleeding, bruising, skin irritation, or discomfort may occasionally occur. These are known and possible effects of the insertion process.

While CGM devices are designed for normal daily activities, their performance and durability may be affected by factors such as vigorous physical activity, excessive movement, contact sports, water exposure, accidental impact, improper handling, or premature removal

Patients are responsible for taking reasonable care of the device while it is in use. The clinic cannot guarantee the full lifespan of the sensor once it has been applied.

In the event that a CGM sensor becomes damaged, dislodged, detached, or stops functioning due to external factors or patient activities, the clinic will not be responsible for replacement, refunds, or compensation.

By proceeding with CGM insertion, training, or purchase through our clinic, patients acknowledge and accept these risks and terms.

General

How accurate are CGM devices?
Modern CGM systems such as Dexcom G7 and FreeStyle Libre are designed to provide reliable glucose readings and have been widely used in diabetes management. While they are generally accurate, readings may occasionally differ slightly from finger-prick blood glucose tests. In certain situations, a finger-prick test may still be recommended to confirm glucose levels.
Can I shower, swim, or exercise while wearing a CGM sensor?
Most CGM sensors are water-resistant and designed to be worn during normal daily activities, including showering, swimming, and exercise. However, users should follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding water exposure and sensor care. Some manufacturers recommend a maximum of 20 minutes' exposure to swimming
Will I feel the sensor under my skin?
The CGM sensor is very small and sits just under the skin. Most users quickly become accustomed to wearing it and report that it is generally comfortable and unobtrusive.
Can CGM data be shared with doctors or family members?
Some CGM systems allow glucose data to be shared through smartphone applications. This enables healthcare providers or caregivers to monitor glucose trends and support diabetes management when necessary.
What happens if the CGM sensor falls off?
If a sensor becomes dislodged before the recommended wear time, it will need to be replaced.
How quickly does CGM show changes in glucose levels?
CGM systems typically update glucose readings every few minutes. Because they measure glucose in the interstitial fluid rather than directly in the blood, readings may lag slightly behind blood glucose during rapid changes.
Is CGM suitable for children or teenagers?
CGM may be suitable for children and adolescents with diabetes, particularly when frequent glucose monitoring is needed. Our doctor can advise whether CGM is appropriate based on the child’s condition and needs.
Do I need training to use a CGM device?
Most CGM systems are designed to be user-friendly. During a consultation, our Doctors can guide you on sensor insertion, device setup, and interpretation of glucose readings.
