Causes of Ankle Pain

Sprained Ankle

Inversion or twisting of the ankle, often during sports or on uneven walking surfaces. Causes pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected ankle. Learn more about ankle sprain treatment.

Achilles Tendinitis

Overuse or repetitive stress on the Achilles tendon, common in runners or athletes. Causes pain and stiffness along the back of the ankle towards the heel, especially after physical activity. Discover Achilles tendinitis treatment options.

Peroneal and Tibialis Posterior Tendonitis

Pain on the outer or inner sides of the ankle respectively, due to overuse or repetitive stress of the ankle stabiliser tendons. Causes pain, swelling, and instability.

Ankle Arthritis

Both Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis can occur in the ankle. Cause joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. Often seen in older adults or following previous ankle injuries.

When Ankle Pain Needs Urgent Care

Most ankle pain can be safely assessed and managed by our GP team. However, please seek medical attention promptly – or visit an Emergency Department – if you experience:

  • Severe ankle pain after a fall, direct blow, or significant trauma
  • Visible deformity of the ankle, or inability to bear weight at all
  • Signs of infection such as redness, warmth, swelling, or fever
  • Severe swelling that restricts blood flow (foot turning pale or blue, or feeling numb)
  • Pain accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness in the foot or toes

In the above instances, it would be highly recommended by doctors to rule out more serious ankle injuries through appropriate imaging, such as an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI, and for the patient to be assessed by an Emergency Physician or Orthopaedic Surgery Specialist before starting physiotherapy. Early identification of structural, traumatic, vascular, or neurological causes of ankle pain is essential to ensure safe and effective treatment.

Ankle Pain Treatment and Pain Relief

Painkillers, injections, and surgery shouldn't be the only options for ankle pain relief. At Regis Medical, our doctors, acupuncturists, and physiotherapists work together – under one roof, at both our Holland Village and Katong clinics – to find and treat the root cause of your ankle pain.

GP Doctor Assessment

An evidence-based approach to diagnose, assess, and find the root cause of your ankle pain or ankle injury. By considering your medical history, lifestyle, and any contributing factors, so that we can tailor a personalised treatment plan to meet your unique needs.

Regular Progress Reviews and Post-Recovery Follow-Up

Regis Medical doctors will actively review your recovery progress in periodic fashion and help arrange for scans if necessary.

Acupuncture for Ankle Pain

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.

Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture may help relieve ankle pain, ease muscle tension, and support the body's natural healing process – a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for pain management. Cupping therapy may also be used alongside acupuncture to improve circulation and release muscle tension. Not every patient is suitable for acupuncture; our doctors will assess this with you first.

Physiotherapy for Ankle Pain

Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.

Physiotherapy for ankle pain may include:

  • Ultrasound Therapy – stimulates healing and reduces inflammation in the ankle, promoting tissue repair and effective management of ankle pain and injuries
  • Exercise Prescriptions – prescribed exercises and stretching programmes improve ankle strength, flexibility, and mobility, providing pain relief and supporting the healing process of ankle injuries
  • Electrotherapy – modalities like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) alleviate ankle pain by altering pain signals and promoting the release of endorphins
  • Posture Education – education on proper posture, gait, and biomechanics minimises strain on the ankle, including recommendations for walking, standing, and exercises to prevent ankle pain and injuries
  • Deep Tissue Massage – targets deeper muscle layers and connective tissue in the ankle, relieving chronic pain, reducing muscle tension, and improving blood flow to aid in injury recovery
  • Sports Physio for Ankle Pain – tailored programmes for ankle pain occurring during sports activities such as running, basketball, soccer, and tennis, designed to relieve pain, target the unique stresses these sports place on the ankle, and reduce the risk of recurring injury

Ankle Pain Related

What's the difference between an ankle sprain and a more serious ankle injury?
An ankle sprain is a stretch or small tear in the ligaments supporting the ankle, usually causing pain and swelling but not complete loss of function. More serious injuries like fractures or severe ligament tears cause severe pain, inability to bear weight, visible deformity, or significant bruising. If you're unsure about the severity, it's best to get it assessed.
How long does an ankle sprain usually take to recover?
Most mild to moderate ankle sprains improve within 2-4 weeks with proper rest, elevation, and physiotherapy. More severe sprains can take 6-12 weeks. Recovery speed depends on the severity of the sprain and how consistently you follow your treatment plan.
Can I exercise with an ankle injury?
Yes, with modifications. Complete rest can sometimes lead to stiffness and weakness. Low-impact activities may be tolerated depending on the injury severity, while high-impact activities like running should be avoided initially. Our physiotherapists can guide you on which activities are safe and how to progress.
Is acupuncture effective for ankle pain?
Acupuncture may help some patients manage ankle pain, muscle tension, and inflammation, particularly when used alongside physiotherapy and medical treatment. Suitability varies by individual, which is why our doctors assess each patient before recommending acupuncture.
What can I do to prevent ankle pain and injury?
Proper footwear, ankle strengthening exercises, warm-ups before sports, and good balance training are key preventive measures. Avoiding uneven surfaces when possible and maintaining a healthy weight also reduce ankle strain. Our physiotherapists can provide specific recommendations tailored to your activities.
What causes Achilles tendinitis and how long does it take to heal?
Achilles tendinitis is typically caused by overuse, sudden increases in activity, or tight calf muscles, especially in runners. Recovery usually takes 3-6 months with proper rest, physiotherapy, and acupuncture. Returning to activity too quickly can lead to recurrence, so gradual progression is important.
