Common causes of foot pain and discomfort:

Plantar Fasciitis
Inflammation of the plantar fascia, often due to overuse, improper footwear, or biomechanical issues. Causes heel pain, especially in the morning or after prolonged periods of rest. Learn more about plantar fasciitis treatment.
Achilles Tendinitis
Overuse or repetitive stress on the Achilles tendon, common in runners or athletes. Causes pain and stiffness along the back of the foot towards the heel, especially after physical activity. Discover Achilles tendinitis treatment options.
Flat Feet (Pes Planus)
Lack of arch support due to genetic factors, injury, or muscle weakness. Causes pain and fatigue, often in the arch or heel.
When Foot Pain Needs Urgent Care
Most foot pain can be safely assessed and managed by our GP team. However, please seek medical attention promptly – or visit an Emergency Department – if you experience:
- Severe foot pain after a fall, crush injury, or direct trauma
- Visible deformity of the foot, inability to bear weight, or severe swelling
- Signs of infection such as redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage from the foot
- Severe swelling that restricts blood flow (foot turning pale, blue, or feeling numb)
- Sudden loss of sensation or severe tingling and numbness in the foot
In the above instances, it would be highly recommended by doctors to rule out serious foot conditions such as fracture, tendon rupture, vascular compromise, or joint infection through appropriate imaging and specialist assessment. Early identification and treatment of acute foot injuries is essential to prevent permanent loss of function.
Foot Pain Treatment and Pain Relief
Painkillers, injections, and surgery shouldn't be the only options for foot pain relief. At Regis Medical, our doctors, acupuncturists, and physiotherapists work together – under one roof, at both our Holland Village and Katong clinics – to find and treat the root cause of your foot pain.
GP Doctor Assessment
An evidence-based approach to diagnose, assess, and find the root cause of your foot pain or foot injury. By considering your medical history, lifestyle, and any contributing factors, so that we can tailor a personalised treatment plan to meet your unique needs.
Regular Progress Reviews and Post-Recovery Follow-Up
Regis Medical doctors will actively review your recovery progress in periodic fashion and help arrange for scans if necessary.
Acupuncture for Foot Pain
Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.
Acupuncture and electro-acupuncture may help relieve foot pain, ease muscle tension, and support the body's natural healing process – a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for pain management. Cupping therapy may also be used alongside acupuncture to improve circulation and release muscle tension in the foot. Not every patient is suitable for acupuncture; our doctors will assess this with you first.
Physiotherapy for Foot Pain
Available in-house at both Holland Village and Katong.
Physiotherapy for foot pain may include:
- Ultrasound Therapy – stimulates healing in foot structures, promoting tissue repair and effective management of foot pain and injuries
- Exercise Prescriptions – prescribed exercises and stretching programmes improve foot strength, flexibility, and mobility, providing pain relief and supporting the healing process of foot injuries
- Deep Tissue Massage – targets deeper muscle layers and connective tissue in the foot, relieving chronic pain, reducing muscle tension, and improving blood flow to aid in injury recovery
- Electrotherapy – modalities like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) alleviate foot pain by altering pain signals and promoting the release of endorphins
- Posture and Gait Education – education on proper foot mechanics, walking patterns, and body positioning minimises strain on the foot, including recommendations to prevent foot pain and injuries
- Sports Physio for Foot Pain – tailored programmes for foot pain occurring during sports activities such as running, basketball, soccer, and tennis, designed to relieve pain, target the unique stresses these sports place on the foot, and reduce the risk of recurring injury
